2024 UK politics - now with Labour in charge

I agree - the new build estates I've seen force you to have a car to do almost anything, while not having much garden or storage.
But if you can build anywhere, it doesn't have to be on an estate, and it doesn't have to be a sprawl. The blocks near me are fine, and walking distance to amenities.

That seems to be the dream for many though. I'd allow building far more liberally for car free communities.

Should say 'something went wrong, try again in 5 years'.

Yeah, that's my feeling on it. People deserve the right to be able to by a home, aspire to something.
That does seem to describe modern day housing. A garden you couldn't swing a cat in and bang slap next to another house. To add insult to injury they have to mortgage themselves to the hilt to be able to afford it. I bet WWII prefabs have better gardens.
I don't know...

I've said this before - it is already means tested via the tax system...

See, you're learning. Despite voting Labour 😉

Why does it have to be one or the other? You can approve planning consents whilst having Conditions that prevent 'sprawling generic estates'.

E V E R !

Unless that's somewhere fairly central in a big city, you're probably just giving hippies free license to build.

Anyway, I like Rachel Reeves, she speaks well and has the demeanor to get some shit done.
I'm not a political football supporter, give them a chance and see what they can achieve.

We gave them enough rope last Thursday...

Is that because we are sort of moving to an English speaking monoculture though?
I feel the issues in America are just more extreme. We have counties that are poor and disconnected, they have whole states. We have cities that are unaffordable, they have San Francisco/NY/etc.
We have cities that are going bankrupt, they have Detroit.

Yeah, sure. I do see a lot of sprawling generic eastes though. Don't you Pross on your travels?

Lots of noise, let’s see what changes have an actual real world impact after 100 days of new government.

Meh, even 100 days is probably short.
I think if, come the next GE, they have successfully reformed the planning system, and got some spades in the ground for some large infrastructure projects, they will have done well.

Mmmm, Reeves will be out there kicking some green belted arse I reckon.

Let's hope the Tories get their shit together, there should always be some opposition holding the leaders to account. That ain't going to be from the feckless outings and ice cream party, where have all the diehard Libs gone on here?

After nearly 25 years working in construction, I haven't met a lot of hippie developers.

I don't think so. The whole world suffered a financial crises and responded with cheap asset bubble creating money. The whole world then had covid. Brexit was big news for some people during this time, but not something that changed the worldwide story.

You'd like the Cambridge one's then. Can drive up to the house if you want but have to park it in a residents only car park round the back.

Don't know about the honeymoon period. More like just governing the country rather than permanently campaigning for the Tory leadership.
0 -
Correct. Brexit is a symptom.
1 -
"Brexit" is just the UK's specific symptom of the general malaise afflicting western Europe, namely voters with unrealistic, ill-informed expectations. This malaise manifests itself in different ways, e.g. voting for the commies in France yesterday.

This is just careless and loose tongued from an advisor. It's not his job to set policy, and that would be a profoundly unpopular one.
More likely they will quietly drop the £83k cap on care costs, since that's a sure fire way to reduce most people's assets below any realistic means tested benefits threshold.

It wouldn't matter so much on Mars as a garden would be a bit pointless.

It's more having somewhere within easy strolling distance to buy a pint of milk. Or beer.
