Seemingly trivial things that cheer you up

A random walk in the Dorset Countryside and I come across a "banger racing" meet. A few mean comments about the scene could be made here but huge credit to them, there was a very high proportion of girls racing too...
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Well, bangers gonna... bang...?

I hope you asked why they were driving. Bloody hypocrite Greenies!

It was a small hybrid, and she halved her personal footprint by giving me a lift! And the next day she was going on holiday somewhere way south (off Spain, I think) by train and ferry, rather than driving or flying.
Stevo would be glad to know she can't afford to be an absolutist: whilst I'm sure she does all she can for public transport, in a sparsely-populated mountainous/rural constituency, some level of car-usage will be part of the mix for a very long time, though I' sure if I questioned her (which would be a pleasure, if we ever bumped into each other again - she does follow my FB Page), she'd have all sorts of views about how car usage can be reduced.

The England supporters that left the ground early last night.

Ha, I PM'd my photo of the outside seating for a very local pizza place, wondering if they'd like to use it, and I'm getting a free pizza out of it. I'm an influenza!
I've got that right, haven't I?

Still think the French have it right when it comes to work and lunch.
little place a 5 minute walk away. Everyone knows everyone. Lots of hand shaking, lovely wine, decent food. they even get the right amount of wine - not pouring half a bottle into your glass before your big afternoon meeting.

I believe the wine is on the way out for a lot of people, which feels outrageous

Yep, I always enjoyed the lunches when visiting our GMC office in Lyon. Monheim / Frankfurt / Dusseldorf not so much.

Depends whether the abscissa range selection is intentionally misleading or not doesn't it?
If something is expected to change by 1%, like the price of petrol, and you intentionally use a range of 99-101 to support a hand wringing tweet about big rises in petrol prices it's legitimate to point this out.
Similarly if the average world ocean temperature goes up 3 degrees in 50 years and you plot this with an axis that goes from zero Kelivn, you could be accused of intentionally downplaying a problem.
If it's social science though, I am told you can do whatever the hell you want providing it supports your view.

Bloody hell. Mark Cavendish, eh?

Didn’t he tho’. Cheered up or what 😃

Does he show his workings?

Oh come on this is just attempted Jedi mind tricks. It can clearly be either. It's just irritating now.

I see, so his defence is to pick some of the few examples where it might be acceptable in order to cover up all his unacceptable click bait. A bit like arguing Harold Shipman was a good doctor to many patients.

Don't forget Jimmy Saville's charity work.
These might be false equivalences,.but that never stops the FT.

Please can you show the replies. I need my faith in human nature restored by other people saying "bollocks"

As someone avoiding the race thread until the highlights... Thanks...

I'm not sure how best to show the replies...but I don't think he's convinced people.

Zooming out the y-axis doesn't tell you anything about trends as they only exist over time (x axis). It just wastes space.
This is just the data viz equivalent of grammar Nazis. Anyone who can read can intuit the absent bit of blank space.

I would argue a no zero start Y axis is indicative of a modern day "I want it now" lazy society.

You've forgotten about scale and legibility, and the limits of printed publications (or screen resolution on digital devices for that matter).

The UK, Australia and US are very similar? That's going to divide opinion.

Just to add, I was thinking of the scale and legibility, and the limits of printed publications (or screen resolution on digital devices for that matter), when I typed that.

Do you think he produces anything other than click bait? I clicked, so he, or Rick, won.

You're viewing his output through the lens of just the bits that are specifically designed to be clickbait. Newspapers need readers to stay in business.
