No-one came close despite him going quite early.

It was like the matrix - he was on Philipsen's wheel, then moved left, then right and Philipsen was on his wheel!

    Worth the wait

Awesome, didn't expect that. Wasn't even close in the end.

The way that went it's a real shame there's no Champs stage this year, would have been a great way to sign off.

That looked suspiciously easy. Not that it isn't deserved, but I expected 2024 Cav to have to battle a lot harder than that for a win. If that one was that easy, he could easily win a few more.

Is it unfair to suggest that his rivals may have given him that win?

I don't believe anyone gifted him that win.

Given the margin, I agree, and how he works of confidence, we could/should see a few more.

I had a memory pop up from 2016 when I was in France and saw him win the first stage of that years Tour and take both yellow and green jerseys.

Still think he should have swallowed his pride and retired years ago though.

Yes, it was Mads Pedersen who crashed.

Kristoff got third. It's a day for the old boys.

I don't think anyone would gift a stage win to someone in another team like that, it's just crazy talk. Also quite hard to actually orchestrate in a bunch sprint!

It is yes - watch the overhead at how mad it was and how he placed himself.

What a way to do it though. Team did a great job to drop him off where he wanted, he showed every ounce of experience to freelance into exactly the right position, then smoked everybody with a burst of speed and power that caught them sleeping. Classic Cavendish, frankly.

Was a bit emotional to be honest... First stage I have tuned in for so far

Plus its the Tour. You don't gift a win to anyone aside from Teammates

No, his team did a great job, he played the sprint perfectly and things worked out for him as well

I was watching on tiny phone screen, and it looked too easy. But happy to take the collective lack of cynicism to heart and drop that thought.

As ever with him, he saw the chance clearly and bossed it.

Delighted for him, and for the history of the Tour.

Cavendish will want to fill his boots now. If he wins tomorrow, he can even consider the green.
