Why should I buy an iphone to my teenager?

Yeah, the 'everything works out of the box' is a function of Apple not letting anyone look tinker the bonnet and this how they control their market. Can see why it's popular (as long as you ignore the $s).

My wife is into the 'smartphone free childhood' thing - there are a few kids at her secondary school who won't be getting smartphones, we got her the Nokia so she can keep in touch with primary school friends when they go to various secondary schools. She's happy with it for now but i fully expect to be badgered for a smartphone in the near future.
Part of the problem is that smartphones are just much more user friendly, not least because of the qwerty keyboard.

I suspect the alcohol/smartphone comparison is valid. Maybe better to allow in great moderation at an age when the functions are useful, and to gradually relax, so the pluses and minuses have been understood through useage and appropriate help and parental controls.

I don't know about you Rick but in a lot of cases I've found people a generation older seem to have forgotten a lot of the harder/more complex bits of parenting and are surprisingly inept. And that's for stuff they actually did have to deal with for their kids, like eating, sleep, dealing with tantrums etc. Phones weren't an issue for our generation.

I grew up chained to PCs for gaming, over clocking, doing all sorts of tricks to get shit to work.
I don’t miss any of that at all.
Same now with the steam deck. Don’t get me wrong, I adore that thing, absolutely adore it, life changing even, but god I don’t miss the faff that comes with getting stuff working smoothly.

You should work in IT, because you seem to think "solution" and "workaround" are synonyms.
The only lack of cross compatibility I see across the multitude of global law firms I correspond with is Apple's version of outlook. It's almost as though they've grudgingly provided the app, but ensured it's slightly shitter than using their own.
It is sometimes a requirement to attach emails to emails, because it's harder to alter the time stamp or edit. Forwarding something in line is fine in the main, but not always because it's easy to fuck around with the original message.
Also, quite often it is necessary to re-send or forward multiple attachments including emails, for example when transferring a case file. Pisses people off if they get 10, rather than 1 with 10 attachments.

Ha, reminds me of the time I lost it with someone on a committee who 'forwarded' an email, which the committee discussed. I only found out when the original sender forwarded me the original version of the email, after we'd sent him a contract to be signed, including the crucial bit later deleted that quoted his fee as "£800 in cash, or £1100 by cheque". Fortunately he'd opened himself up to investigation by HMRC if he complained, and the contract was never signed by either party.

Honestly if something is important enough that it shouldn't be editable then it shouldn't be an email

TBH, I think things have got slightly slicker in the last 5-10 years, and Android and Windows add-ons aren't nearly as likely to feck-up the system unintentionally. as they were once. I remember rooting my first Android tablet just to be able to plug in an SD card.

That I can believe. Last android I had was a Galaxy s3 what, 11 years ago. Went Apple after that and it was so refreshing.
Not been on someone else's phone for a while but I remember everyone Android had about 1,300 notifications in the corner that were never easy to turn off, and the back button would change randomly depending on what app it was. Pain in the arse.

Aside from that being nonsense, it's fairly trivial to doctor most formats. It's just a question of how convenient it is.

So in your industry it's fine to "fuck around with the original message" as long as they have to work a bit to do it?

There's quite a clear divide in my industry on whether you change/tweak CVs or not (or if you correct their mistakes etc or not).
I am firmly in the "don't change it one bit" camp.

I think you've misunderstood entirely.

You are looking at the world through Outlook like it's *the* mail client rather than one of twenty. None of them use the same message format. It's not 'Apple's version of Outlook'. They're all HTML-based under the bonnet, but they all encode slightly differently.
As it happens I'm responsible for the IT in our office and have been for the last 15-odd years. Workarounds are just part of life.

They still aren't solutions. And if the workaround is not to do something you kind of have to do, it's not even a workaround it is just annoying.
To your other point, if 90% of people use the same format, the other 19 are irrelevant. It's like the one twat who insists on using open office out of principle and then complains the formatting is all screwed up.
I'm in professional services. We don't get many emails from Hotmail. But when we do, or when I've sent emails attached to emails (not work related or confidential I might add) to basic webmail, I have not had problems other than with the iPhone. Probably because they are all the same underneath and Apple have to try quite hard to figure out how to inconvenience people. This is their philosophy though right? Hence the bespoke charger that is having to be legislated out of existence.

Oh, I see, we're going with plucking numbers out of the air. 😁
I'm in professional services, too. We use a variety of mail client apps. That's distinct from who is hosting your mail accounts. Lots of our clients still using Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail accounts, everything really. You can't tell what client app they are using from their account domain. The client app determines the formatting.
If you want to attach a universally readable file use a PDF. These actually have security features unlike an email message, which is essentially just a text file.

No shit Sherlock, are pdfs a universal format? Actually, they aren't, but that's another story.
Anyhow, my outlook doesn't have problems with emails on the whole. Neither does my email account. Just the one on the iPhone. Go figure.
The workaround is Android, in case that's not obvious yet.

It's possible that Tesla will be releasing a smartphone in a few years so it might be worth holding off till then, anybody in a mobile state of flux.

Yes but it will be Android and probably have a fully functioning outlook app.
0 -
That's a fair point.

A darn sight more universal than Outlook's proprietary mail formatting, You have a choice of mail apps on an iPhone as well.
All this boils down to you being locked into Microsoft's eco system rather than Apple's. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Neither meshes perfectly with the Android OS.

Am I the only one that uses Outlook (and Office) apps on my iPhone with no issue?
1 -
But can you attach an email to a screenshot of an email?

Certainly not me. Office is clunky enough on a decent laptop. I tend to use Google stuff, though avoid Sheets on the phone, as it somewhat negates the whole point of spreadsheets if you can't 'spread'.

Not sure this 14 year old will be impressed with that answer

We have several spare iPhones kicking around the house that were surplus ones from Mrs W work. I can’t wait till my 10 year old grandson wants one. Then he might be able to show me how mine works😉
