It's extraordinary how this policy has landed on twitter.
The right depise it as much as the left do.
My favourite thing about it is the 2.5 billion price tag.

Like it's going to happen. Next.
Btw, if the spin was to appeal to those who had been compelled into national service in the past, such compulsion ended in 1960 so the target audience would have to be 82 or older... that's a sig proportion of the electorate.

Absolutely vindicated in my view this govt hates young people. You all said I was making it up lol - I think it’s quite clear now.

TBF not many 18 years old will be voting tory, so why not, its for the good of the country. Actually, they should include Millennials while they're at it.

The current Tory party is utterly pitiful. It is like someone with dementia. Clear memories of 50 or more years ago, but no idea what's going on around them right now.

Has someone taken him hostage?

Makes more sense for it to be a condition of receiving a state pension surely. It feels like there's a decent number of that population who need to exposed to the real world again.

Instead of the 35 years of qualifying contributions, or on top of?

This govt hates everyone who is not them.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

I can think of a few that would go for that providing it was something they can reasonably do, adds value to the community and is paid.

Paid for volunteering?

They'd still get what they are entitled to, as long as they do the compulsory volunteering.

If its a condition of receiving state pension then its not volunteering.

The problem with this policy is how half arsed it is. If it was military service, or a compulsory few months doing something at least you can see who it's aimed at even if you disagree.
This is a few weekends helping the police? What does that mean, and how is it not going to cost shitloads while diverting police officers from doing their proper work even more?

The Tories describe their alternative to doing a year in the army as volunteering, so i think it's fine.

Exactly, does the fire service need a few young dabblers getting in the way. Probably not unless they are interested in joining the fire service.

No point in discussing it any further as it's never going to see the light of day.

As I've said upthread more than once, careful what you wish for if you are thinking of voting Labour.

Might as well have just come out and said "please don't vote reform, we can be old and mad too".

Yes but I was responding to your comment….
God knows what the are tories about other than having a meltdown looking for votes. 😁

Not sure you need to qualify it to 18 year olds. Oddly enough most people don't want this for their children either.

It’s just a way of drafting kids from poor families. Tarquin will be going to Oxbridge to study classics and Hermione is studying dentistry so they can’t go.

At some point today Sunak's team have to stop him from going to Wembley for the play off final.

It's going to be paid for by clamping down on tax avoidance 🤡

I've revised my order after the most recent announcement. Johnson, May, Truss and now Sunak. I think this makes him the worst PM in my lifetime.
