Surely the Tory party are the Party of ridiculously punitive tax cliffs that punish the moderate successful salaried classes.

The Family Allowance clawback a particularly vicious example.

Fair comment.
Someone's got to do it here, but don't say you weren't warned...

I'm looking forward to Stevo's July 5th assessment of the state Labour have got the country into

Just looking on Wikipedia.
My own constituency of North Antrim has been held by the same family (Paisley) since 1971.
I can't imagine there's any other has been held by the same family for as long

Have to disagree with your point about where the extra tax will come from. First off, there aren't many super rich and many of them are internationally mobile and have enough at stake to make it worthwhile moving somewhere a bit more 'friendly'. Of those that can't or don't want to move, a fair proportion have more ability to plan around whatever Labour will throw at them.
Personally I'm not too worried, but that's because a combination of personal and family circumstances will mean I'll be better off under pretty much any feasible scenario (finish funding my kid through uni this time next year and her starting to earn, plus getting shot of all but a small rump of the mortgage not too long after that). Then it's just a case of waiting to see when is a good time to crystallise the pension funds.

It happens to all parties after long enough in power. Was the same for Labour after 13 years in power from 1997 to 2010. Except that their reset made them worse, thanks to some diligent efforts by people like me (see the Labour party thread) 😀

6 weeks after posting this I'm thinking I was (yet again) entirely wrong.
The first polls say it's holding. But I don't know.
But I'm not sure what the consequences of the Reform vote evaporating may be.
They clearly aren't ready to run 600 candidates

This is true, but I can't recall quite this level of rats abandoning the ship.
In any case, after time the country does benefit from a change of government, as well.

Farage not participating suggests to me he is not convinced they will do well and his absence won’t help either.
They underperformed polls in the local election and that tends to suit them.

It really has been an extraordinary 3 years.

Hartlepool has a solid record, as in hanging monkeys as spies and electing the footie monkey mascot as mayor so no surprise they elected a tory. What fun. Or stupidity. Depending on one's perception.

Just seen that Sunak has been doing a photo op with our local MP this afternoon almost outside my front door. Maybe because he's one of the few that isn't stepping down.

Surely that's on a par with Scotland electing the SNP to cut off the financial lifeline that it gets from England?

Hey thatcherloverboi, where are the oilfields that have been pumping mega £ since the 70s? Aye right, Lahndahn is funding Ecosse.
Next.

Even with the oil, you're still getting handouts from us. Be grateful instead of doing the stroppy teenager act 😉

Depends if you regard Scotland as part of a United Kingdom or not.

They really have the finger on the pulse of what matters to people. Do they get their policies from a focus group of the sort of people that still intend voting for them? They were hinting at tax cuts for high earners today as well. That’s going to appeal to the majority who are feeling the effects of already high taxation whilst services decline across the board.

I think they should bring back corporal punishment. And legalise spanking (outside of Whitehall back offices, late at night)

Beyond Scottish and English Nationalist daydreams it's a pretty well settled matter as of 1707.
Oil and gas extraction is less than 1% of UK GDP so really not worth squabbling over, but I guess if you are politically stuck in the 70s...

The plan is working.
Is the plan to get all tory M.P.s voted out? He really is stabbing them all in the back.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
What an incredibly workable policy.
