Tense last few kms. My least favourite monument by quite a margin, though.

Pog can't drop MDVP on the Poggio.
See you all again next year

I thought Pidders had pulled a masterstroke there, shame it didn't quite work out, he needed a smaller group behind him really.
Gutted for Ganna, looked like a mechanical issue presumably 🙁

Yeah, he would have had a good chance once they were off the climb.

Pog was pretty much as fast as the pure sprinters at the finish there.

I absolutely love it. Yes, it's a slow burner but the build up of excitement to the climax of the race never fails to deliver. Plus it's almost unique in the range of winners it can deliver, from grand tour winners through to pure sprinters.
Wouldn't necessarily watch the whole race unlike Roubaix or Flanders but the last hour is unmissable.

The steeper section is just too short and everyone is waiting for his move. It was noticeable he actually got a gap by going again when it wasn’t expected.

Just watched last 40km - enjoyed that finale.

Pog needed another couple of strong guys to take over when Del Toro faded. It all bunched back up when he started wilting.
With Phillipsen there at the bottom of the descent there was a slight air of inevitability about it. Without him there, Mohoric or Pidcock could easily have won as MvdP wouldn't have done those big efforts to reel them in.

It's really hard to see how Pogacar can win this race, but with a 5th, 4th and now 3rd he is getting closer. Really admire the way he tries.

Pidcock would have been very close without stuyven taking over when mvdp wasn't closing in.

Pog needs to attack on the Turchino and go long

The last time the winning move went on the Turchino was when Chiappucci won way back in 1991. It was a very wet edition and he, along with Charly Mottet and a few others, created a gap on the descent, that was never very big, but the chase behind never succeeded in closing it down (and I think we all know partly why that was).
As good as Pogacar is, I don't think it this current era, a group could hold off the peloton along the coast road, as they'd just have too much man power.

Pidcock did well given his supposed 200km race limit.

Must have been getting plenty of energy drinks down him hence the need for a piss at a rather late stage.

Well the race is not exactly hard until he makes it hard. His physiology in general as I've posted before allows him to arrive extremely fresh up to the last climb or selection point.
It was definitely not easy on the Poggio. UAE were bullied off of position prior to the Cipressa and the cost of making it back up to the front greatly dulled their knife of making the Cipressa extremely selective.
That pace would already not be too hard for Pogacar, but del Toro ran out of steam and Wellens had to delay, so he was probably entirely recovered and the other hitters probably mostly recovered.
The "fastest ever MSR" is a rather pointless metric aimed at casuals who don't understand racing or what makes racing hard.
That being said MvdP did an outstanding job of sacrificing himself without hesitation for Philipsen when Philipsen told him he had good legs.
All the favorites seem to be in really good form and WVA will be coming off of 3 weeks at altitude, so it's going to be fireworks in the next weeks! Can't wait!

Matthews may never get closer than that

Sometimes I write something I don't actually believe .... I'll do that a few more times this year .

Bling's shades cost him the victory I reckon

Alaphillipe did OK considering some people are making him out to be a raging alcoholic.

He has also had a horrendous run to MSR. Crashed like 3 times already. Very solid result considering.
