The Big 'Let's sell our cars and take buses/ebikes instead' thread (warning: probably very dull)

See comments about signage clutter and poor signage. Both Pross and DB have also mentioned this.

Stevo spends too much time complaining about traffic enforcement and way to little about the abominable cycle infrastructure.

I agree completely (I did a dissertation on it - it was as boring as it sounds). The problem is there are also a lot of thick road users who need to be told everything. If it was up to me it would just be regulatory signs and a few key direction signs. Warning signs get over-used to the point that you get cry wolf syndrome when there is a genuine unusual hazard drivers might not expect.

Nope, I avoided getting fined so beat the council highwaymen 🙂

It's anti LTN campaigners who advocate for non physical barriers because they claim emergency services need to get through as a way of doluting the LTN. I'd imagine disappearing bollards are quite pricey. Councils would always rather a cheap planter to a camera.

There are no LTN fines if you don't have a car. Just thought I would bring it back on topic.

Why is Ricktopia not called Beantopia?

Which helps back up my point that money is a motivating factor for councils in these instances.

It's odd that you say you are pro people making informed choices on the best forms of transport, but that they will get hit with bigger sticks if they make the 'wrong' ones.
Bear in mind there are a lot of motorists and they have votes - p1ss them off too much and the backlash will increase.

People have differing opinions. Who'd have thunk it?
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Only in the sense that councils don't have much money, not in the sense that LTNs are put in with the aim of making money. That's just a daft conspiracy theory.
Everything councils do is dependent on the money being there, obviously. LTNs are being put in because they are a massive net public good.

If they make it less likely that people drive in from outside London, that's a side benefit. So your dislike of them as a concept is all good.

So condescending.
Do you not read other people's posts properly? I clearly stated I was Sat-Nav'ed into a couple of LTNs. Car is 3 years old, a Skoda, so the same system as in your new car.

To contin the millennial condescending... Who is using the built in sat nav

I was thinking that 😂

Don't even have a built in one. Phone is cheaper, better and more up to date.

Of course, how silly of me, everyone over 35 is incapable of using 21st century technology.

I found the LTNs were not accurately marked on my AA road atlas! I've written a strongly worded letter.

Came across some of these in York on Friday, they were sliding ones. I did remark to my other half that they had the potential to go badly wrong.

Funny how the moving obstacle that is a car is never considered part of the problem for emergency services.

I like the video where drivers try to cheekily get through before rising bollards, and fail.

Yes, they are always amusing. A little compilation from just one...

Err, generally they move out of the way

Doesn't stop me from driving into London when I feel like it 🙂

That's why I said it's a motivating factor, not some conspiracy. Did you read my post properly before replying?

I pedal into town with no real problems and tbh you dont need 'cycling infrastructure' where I ride round my way - beyond a tarmac surface.
