Mainland to mainland approx 55 miles. However, between the 2 Diomede islands in the Bering strait, one Russian one USAnian, it is 2.5 miles. HTH.

That's literally what I said. And the comment that followed was presumably a quip about the border between Brazil and French Guiana. So whilst mainland France and Brazil are about 5000 miles away, which is more representative, Alaska and Russia (which are equally representative if you are either Alaskan or interested in warming the planet by releasing and burning methane clathrates) is really jolly close.

Anchorage is not that close to Russia though whereas it's not that far from Cayenne to Brazil (or Suriname)
0 -
Yes it's closer than the average Texan thinks but the actual distance is pretty irrelevant.

Not to the average "What has Europe got to do with us" MAGA supporter. Whereas if you tell them they share a border (albeit a maritime one) they'd want the air force and navy to be patrolling their side of a wall.

Where you one of those who laughed at Palin when she used to say she could see Russia from her house?
0 -
She didn't say that. Maybe that's your point. I don't know.

That when it comes to making snide remarks about right wing, Americans, it's important to make fun of them for not knowing how close Alaska is to Russia, but also to make fun of them if they do.
There's currently a whole genre of Trump fans who fly Russian flags. Who knows whether they'd be scared about a maritime border.

I bet they would if the Russians marched in.
Maybe not Alaska or Canada, but certainly Washington State.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
It's a good point. The MAGA intellect level is indeed low.
0 -
Higher, same as or lower than that of the SpafferBloJo fanclub?
0 -
Sure, but that's not going to happen.

Washington State is not particularly close to Russia. There's a huge state and and a fairly big province in the way.
0 -
There's also Siberia in the way between Alaska and the bit of Russia with people in it.
But knowing that Alaska is near Russia is probably useful for pub quizzes.

I kinda did mention that. The worrying part is MAGA guy can be all talk and no action because it's not going to affect him directly. The rest of the world though...

Convenient spot for a missile base or two though. You don't even need foundations, because of the permafrost. US is working on that one though.

I see the government has decided it is bored of supporting Ukrainian refugees. Presumably it's not enough of a war and the publicity benefits of observing our basic obligations have worn off.
Also care worker shortages are clearly all sorted, so that's great.

Yes, I'd seen Cleverley's proud "Banned!" tweet about expecting furriners to come here and work for the minimum wage but to leave their children in another country. More performative cruelty that fixes nothing.

Gosh, they really don't like being told things aren't working, do they?

This is the party that made it law that a place was “safe” regardless of the actual truth.
Practically Soviet that

And immediately claiming his criticism has "no basis in fact". Can we see a pattern emerging? It's getting more Trumpian by the day.

So they've fired him because of the breach of confidential information, not necessarily because it wasn't true.
If if was true and he's already been "embroiled" in trying to do something about it, this has the whiff of a whistleblower defence to me.

I guess the bin fire will get hotter as we burn down to the really rotten stuff. At this rate there really will be nothing left and they'll be just another bunch of Reform losers. No wonder so many are packing it in while they still have some dignity.

I hope/suspect that he'll have kept the receipts. Constructive dismissal claim too. Could be fun.

And now Canada stating that they have no knowledge of the trade talks Badenoch claimed she was having with them. She seems like a bit of a storyteller.
