Looking increasingly like 18 teams in WT next year, but with reduction to 16 by 2019.

UCI have confirmed this morning that there will be 18 WT teams next season.
  • Indeed, it looks as though the whole plan has been pushed back two years, with 18 teams for 2017 and 18 and the same staggered reduction to 16 by 2020.

Implementing a new system 9-weeks before the end of the season was always going to leave them open to looking like buffoons, but at least they've made a sensible decision in the end (or more likely cut some sort of deal with ASO who were the originators of the whole idea).
Since the commencement of the UCI WorldTeam registration process for 2017, it has become clear that there are 18 candidates for UCI WorldTeam licences. With this in mind, the PCC has decided that for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, a maximum of 18 UCI WorldTeam licences may be issued. In the medium term, the ambition is to strengthen the competitiveness of elite level and therefore to set the maximum number of UCI WorldTeams to 17 in 2019 and 16 from 2020 onwards, with a working group tasked to study this and a number of other topics.

do you reckon the discussion was along the lines of

UCI: we're gonna cut dimension Data

ASO: oh, well we were going to invite them anyway so do whatever you want

I think that probably just about sums it up.

  • What’s the alternative, though?

Teams get same points as riders. Riders take their points with them (in essence, half the points are tied up in riders, half in team). Feels about right - though the ratio might need tweaking - but might avoid the annual farce of riders being dropped from races purely because any points they gain are already known to be leaving.

Ultimately my guess is sponsors at the top end largely want to be visible in the Tour. Anything else is a bonus - however I don't know if this is largely an Anglo perception?

That sounds reasonable to me. It's pretty unedifying to see good riders not racing because they won't bring value to their current team.

I'd say that's pretty much the case.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

    Sheesh.

That is a sad state of affairs.

Italy. It would be a utopia, only if you never had to live there.

Well Lampre-Merida rode Taiwanese bikes with a Japanese groupset....

When was the last time we saw an Italian WT team, on an Italian frame, with Campag on?
