Integrated gear/brake levers

Can you actually open up those douchey 2-in1 integrated brake/gear shifters?
It is a Shimano Tourney and I am getting separate brake and gear levers.
Hopefully I can get it apart and just use the existing cables, but I can't seem to open it up - have taken out 3 screws, but it is still holding together firmly

Why would you want to?0
-
Cause they look crap, and I am getting a new shifter to be compatible with 7-speed. A pair of nice brake levers were only £10 too.0
-
You don't need to open them, just remove the bung and slide the cable out the opposite way it goes in.
But it is a well known fact that 99.987546121478714% of shifting issues are caused by old dead cables. Treat yourself to new ones.I don't do smileys.

The cables are brand new, never been used.
I think you can avoid taking out the brake cable if I remember, but the gearing cable has to be threaded through the shifter, so it has be taken out completely?
If that is true, could I avoid completely reinstalling the brake cable? (with this 2-in-1 monstrosity)0 -
?
If you've just put new cables in, surely you can remember.I don't do smileys.

Park Tools has a good webby too, though, I suspect, you may already have been told of it0 -
It's a new bike, cables came pre-installed.
Want to save the hassle, if possible on the brakes at least.
Gears have to be done from scratch.0 -
Shimano Tourney? What model number?0

Smells a bit fishy to me0

No, just hidden under a bridge away from the male goats.....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Not sure, but they look just like this, albeit this is a 7, not a 6-speed.

Why do you want to change levers. You say it is a new bike. Poor effort.0

So we can all move on to the next enthralling episode.
Brakes – line up the slots in housing and barrel adjuster and cable will magically come out. Unhooking it from the lever first will help.
Gears – remove bung and push cable out backwards. Obviously disconnecting it from the mech and having the shifter in whatever the highest gear is (no tension) will make this possible.I don't do smileys.

No. Way.
Must take you a while to think these up Rubez. 8 out of 10 for effort -0 -
Right so got the brakes out, awesome.
You are saying I need to disconnect the cable at the derailleur and thread it out all the way backwards?0 -
Yeah that's what he's saying. You need to disconnect the derailleur, because obviously you cant pull the cable through all the little cable housing bits and shifter with the derailleur still attatched. What have you got in store for us next?0
-
All out, I'll need to install the cables and get the gears tightened, so stand by in a couple of days
Any particularly decent tutorials out there?
In a nutshell, I think you put it to least loosest gear(?) thread the cable through, pull tight and fix in place?0 -
Yeah that's right the least loosest gear, that's the one.
Did anyone mention it before? Parktools.0 -
I read on the internet that Parktools is quite useful.
Seems to be hard to find though.
But I suggest the most loosest gear, much like the most loosest screws.I don't do smileys.

Yeah but parktools website ONLY exists to sell you their tools, Rubez said so, so it must be true......Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
