Hard time deciding what trainer to go for

Hi,

My only experience with trainers, is with the Tacx genius. I'm now selling this one since i never use the VR abilities and only train with catalyst and i see the benefit not haveing to use a PC to controll it everytime i'm doing a workout.

I want the roadfeel and would absolutly prefer it reasonable quiet. Also easy bike mounting would be nice.

I'm going to use it with a powertap wheel, and also use trainerroad.com the times i hook it up to a computer.

The once it has cooked down to is:

-Cycloops Fluid 2
Read good things about it, says it quiet and gives a nice resistance cuvre. All though the leaking issues with the fluids does make me hesitate somewhat.

-Cycloops Magneto Pro
Also alot of good reviews about this one, but after what i'm reading magnetic trainers tend to be loud and jerky? I see in the reviews that its stated that this actually makes less noise than the fluid 2, and use somekind of powerband technology to make the ride "fluid"... Haveing the possible to crank up resistance for intervals etz is a pluss, alltough you have to dismount the bike if you want to change it.

-Elite Super Crono Hydromag
The things that has catched my attention with this one is the combination of the fluid and magnetic break, seems you get the best of two world! Also possible to make resistance changes thru a "remote". Can also get it in a digital version that gives you watt readings etz. People are stating that this is a quiet trainer due to the ElastoGel roller.
Very easy mounting of bikes since it uses the weight of the rider to press against the flywheel

-Elite Super Crono Forte
Good price, comes with a wireless computer/display, easy fixing.
My hesitation is that its only magnetic, so might be not roadfeel like ride?

Anyone out there that have some experience with trainers and can give me some advice to what trainer i should land on?

How are all this compared to a cheap tacx satori for an instance?

Thanks in advance for any tips and guidance :)

Sartori for me.. cheap last year at Decath .. set up and go.. put in car .. use as warm up pre race...
As 'realistic' as any imo... and runs quietly enough.. depends what you want out of the one you do choose.

Not into bragging rights but since January this year the turbo has had its fair share of use and abuse.. it was being used almost daily for Jan and Feb and it still gets used 2 or 3 times a week now even with road rides..
it has to be setup each time.. no space for it to be left in situ and hasnt fallen apart one little bit.

Function wise the satori would have done the trick, my concerns about that one is the noise. Heard my friend's satori, and its not quiet.

All though the good thing on magnetic vs fluid if i have understood it right, is that its possile for harder work at low rpms.

But..yeah.. quiet is good so i don't wake up the entire familiy :)

of those i'd go for the cycleops fluid 2, imho it's unlikely to ever leak, if it did i think they fix/replace it free

fluid trainers give a much better feel than magnetic ones, magnetic feels like going uphill all the time

with fluid, there's no need for controls to adjust resistance, you just use your gears, much more natural

the kurt kinetic road machine is good, huge flywheel gives excellent feel, they also do an add-on flywheel to make it even better

look on ebay, there're usually quite a few trainers for sale

Yeah, that the fluid is the more relastic once is a thing i have noted to my self.. Just seeing that the Cycloops Magneto says its the only trainer with progressiv resistance just as on the fluids. so i guess it cookes down to wich one of them that makes less noice :D

From your list I'd pick the Cyclops Jet Fluid Pro as fluid trainers have the best road feel but why isn't the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine on your list? Sealed fluid resistance unit so no chance of leaks and built like a tank. Had mine for two years now and its just the job.

The main reason for the road machine isn't on the list is that nobody is selling that brand hete in norway. The same goes for the cyclo jetfluid. Ofcourse i can import it, but then its 150 usd extra in freight and tax .. but also read in a reveiw that it infact gave alot more noise than the fluid 2, don't know if its true though

i've got a fluid 2 and after a couple of years of use am very pleased with it. good resistance curve, quiet, sturdy and have suffered no leakage issues.

    i've written a review here if interested: http://www.centurytraining.com/cycleops ... th-review/

i've not tried any oof the others mentioned here so can't really comment on them.

I got a Satori for £50 last year. Bargain, I thought. I am now partially deaf. So are the neighbours. And all my wine glasses have shattered.

The Fluid 2 was my preferred choice and I haven't regretted it for a moment. Stable, nice resistance curve to it.....and from what I hear the leakage issues are fixed.

Unless they have copied the KK design the thing will leak, it's a fixed seal problem, it will eventually wear out.
I bought a Rock and Roll and love it, just wish it was one that could be upgraded with the extra flywheel, oh well for my paltry efforts it is great.

  • Kurt Kinetic rock and roll here too.
With the added benefit that you can use any old wheel, your laptop and an ANT+ stick and get real time power readings in front of you.
Maybe not so much of an issue for you if you have the powertap wheel, but it could be a seperate indoor power solution to save time swapping wheels etc

Go for a fluid one that also has a flywheel .. i think the Cycle Ops Fluid 2 has. I have an Elite but without the flywheel, but the build quality is bulletproof on Elites.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!
