me ? no unfortunately! i have some avid that work fine,
id like to know tho.
I would hope they wouldnt snap as i braked at toward a cross road.
is it worth saving 50 grams per set.?? 100 grams for the front and rear combined..hey, thats the same weight as 99 pennies in a plastic bag!!!
so to get a feel for the weight reduction selotape 99 pennies to our bikes.
we would would feel the difference!
but, we would feel the bank balance reduction too!! errgg!

me, nope ..never raced...well i race against cars in the city! haha ( i hate cars) people are o.k ..but cars turn them into mad, insane, dis respectful beasts! i have to teach them that bikes rule. it's my hobby! haha
imagine if all cars were electric!!..clean air in the city and less passive smoke in the country too.
i might not have such dirty lungs. and live till im 80 ! general motors are to blame!!
anyways..
been riding since i was 3 ...almost every day for 27 years. but i never used the clip on pedals so i havent built my strength like the pros
its just a hobby really.. but id love to try ...even if i came last...what a buzz it would be!!

ive done it again...im sure there was a question on here from bigal!!/?
its 4.30 am. i think im losing the strength in my tiny brain cells.?!?
nite nite.

Flex can be an issue in SL brakes, seen it before with certain brands.

But i have been found out. Your reply had not appeared!!

hi.
you might not mind carrying around heavy components but some of us like to hill climb a little quicker, anyways, besides being more weight they tend to squeek [:I]and they are much more expensive. ive had hope discs before and a pair on my ol' marin..both squeeked like a double decker bus. i was so happy to back on rim breaks. its different for everyone.
peace:)0 -
yeah, bigal the lightbike site is awesome! im looking for another site simlar to weightweenies.com i found where every component you can imagine was weighed and actually photographed on digital scales(thumbnail photos with links) ,the rims section for example had about 50 photos of almost every rim available its not an english language site, but you can actually see the scales so its easy to work out. just gotta find it again! shall post if i do. you'll love it.

Would you notice the bag of pennies whilst riding? No.
Does that matter? Absolutly not, it's bragging rights that count when you're talking parts like that.

But surely the whole point of weight weenyism is that all these small weight savings add up to a noticeable weight difference and therefore enhanced performance. 100g saving on the brakes, some on the hubs, the rims, the cranks blah blah blah.... Surely you can save kgs this way.

every gram counts regarding:
acceleration, breaking, cornering, wear n tear on moving parts, overall speed you dont need to use so much energy to move. better for your nee's.
if your an old person you need a light bike not a steal beast!! or if your heavy/overweight a lighter bike can help you too.(as long as you ride gracefully and snap the frame)
and its more enjoyable to ride a lighter bike.
if it wasnt so, people wouldnt be making lightweight bike parts.
disadvantage to expensive light bikes = you need a heavy strong lock if you park up somewhere ..kinda defeats the object in way..haha
my the bike i'm using at the moment no way near 5 kilos and never will be .
this isnt about bragging ...its about enjoyment, riding bikes.
hence me coming onto a bike forum. dont you like bikes? dis you think this was a chess forum?? yaaawnn
if lightweight isn't your interest, dont have to go moody in my thread, start your onn about heavy bikes that hellp build a sweat quicker and make you wanna go home and have a bath.0 -

yeah , thats what its about. i used to ride a tank of a bike for about 10 years ..then i had a go a friends bike and i was just blown away ...by the wind..haha.
those bikes are so insanely priced .. but its nice to see what will be available say in 10 -15 years time ...prices always come down .
i wonder how light bikes will be in 20 years time?
i can see the head lines now.

hi,
mine is a mix up of second hand bits from ebay, cash converters, places like that.
aluminium frame (think its a giant ? all the paint is off)
tune mig /mag hubs
xtr mechs
dura ace cassette
kmc chain
very heavy tyres with puncture protection.
and a major heavy front fork that's gotta go!!!
i might get it down to 8kilo? but my bike lock weighs about 1 kilo grrr damn theives.
my last bike was stolen outside a public library with 2 locks on it.no insurance so had to buy second hand stuff.. but if you keep an eye on ebay and places like that ...things appear!! hence me trying to learn about light weight stuff so i recognise the names and models as they turn up.
how about you ?
peace:)0 -
I raced in the novice class at Leisure Lakes in Southport last month (novice class) came second last!! Anyway cos the course is flat I realised I didn't need my sus fork on the front so I got a Bontrager switchblade carbon rigid off fleabay and fitted it last week. WOW!!! what a difference, so I have changed a few other parts and I have been miles faster. There is another race next Sunday and I reckon EASILY i can finsh at least third from last. Anyway after that I am a complete weight weenie convert.

As above, it all adds up slowly. I am down to a respectable 23lbs or so wit the Zaskar, and its still very strong.

hi again,
i found an AWESOME site better than weight weenies (in french tho, so its a little fiddly to start with)
there are 8 grey boxes each for frames , transmision , wheels ect..
click on say chain/(Chaine in french) in the transmition section then select any chain you like by clicking on the small blue link to the side....and what pops up ..the chain your interested in, on a set of electric scales!!!! woo hoo!! no more lies no more searching for 3 days trying to find the correct weight!!
weight weenies eat your ball bearings off.!!
heehee
enjoy
freqy:)
p.s i'll have to make a new thread for this so everyone can see.0 -
I have a GT Avalanche 1.0 at the minute but currently building up a lightweight XC machine around a KHS Alite Team frame. I want to be racing next year. You got any plans to race anything other than cars? [;)]
Al, do you have a race license or do you not need one for the races you do? Good luck by the way, be good to hear how you get on.

No, you basically turn up and pay œ8 inc insurance. You can find details on leisure lakes site under events. There was one guy who said he had a licence. He got in for half price. It was basically a very good mix of people. Satch, where are you based??
AL0 -
yeah Satchmo245, cars smell id love to race against bikes !!
wow, have to check the site out!! is it tarmac? are there corners?

Burnley in Lancashire. How about you?
That sounds perfect. Even though my XC badboy is nowhere near completion I wouldn't mind trying my hand at a few races just for a good day out and meeting new people as you say.

Just down the road in Sunny Manchester. You should get over there and race its about the same distance for you as it is for me. I have got a merlin malt 1. I specced a laurin fork and xm321 wheels cos my riding is usually about a full day in the Lakes. Even dragging loads of weight round (and the bike) I didn't finish last!!!! Give it a go!!![:)]
