Alps Tyres

Off to the alps in about 3 weeks (Les Arcs) for mainly XC trails

I've got a pair of continental Verticals on at moment, but i've also got a pair of Specialized fasttrak Pro's that came with the bike. I swapped these as they were rubbish in the mud / winter, but i'm thinking they might be better for the alps?? (and it'll save some wear on my verticals for when i come back to the UK!)

Anyone been out to the alps give me some advice?

are they less nobbly than the verticals? I didnt want to buy another set of tyres really so choice is verticals or fasttrak pro's!!

I'm taking my Panaracer Cinders. They are pretty aggresive and I like their predictable handling. With your choice i'd take the verticals.

yes they are less nobbly [;)]

worth it for the rampage IMO or the High roller.. i go in 1 week (WAHOOOOOO) i can let you know on my return...

Didn't you say you've gone for steel high rollers Fozzy, so you're not planning on any climbing then? The weather for the Alps at the moment is rain and more rain, I left my tyre decision upto the last minute and bought some new Cinder 2.25s as i've heard that it can get claggy there when it rains. Obviously didn't want to take mud tyres, but needed something that can handle the clag and still allow cornering. I'll be on the plane to Geneva in two days [:)]

I wouldn't take nobby nics, I wrecked mine in Spain when all the side knobs started to come away at their interface with the tyre; brand new before I went as well. If I was you Fozzy i'd keep an eye on the weather and make a choice say next Wednesday. I've not been biking in the Alps before, but when I was out there kayaking once its rained for while, but then stopped and was bone dry in about two days.

i wwould say hight rollers super tacky to make sure you have grip.

High rollers are not that bad in the wet well they better thean the rear minion. Why not take a swamp thing just incase [;)]

I'll be interested to hear how your tyre choice works out, Foz & Seagull. I'm off to Morzine next month.

I'm thinking of buying an Enduro 05 frame (06 swingarm DHX & air shock) and chucking a set of lyriks on it, as everyone else is taking freeride bikes and I don't want to kill my stumpy. I was going to stick my Nics on it. Might take another set of tyres out with me as well.

just got a mail from the guide

comment was bring DH tyres (HR or ramp's) and wait to see how the weather will be next week and bring a fast rolling tyre. DO NOT bring nobby nic's as you WILL slice the sidewall withing 10 meters..

oh well looks like cinders or some cheap 2.3's no idea what..

I will never buy nobby nics again after how quick they died in Spain; they were far too soft. The guides out there were using Cinders and they worked pretty well.

Foz,

been speaking to a guy whose done Passportes and Mega and he reckons resistance to sharp rocks is critical. He runs heavy tyres to resist the rock and so for the last few years has gone tubeless. I'm thinking of the new Michelin Mountain A/T tubeless (2.2). About 850g a tyre but because its tubeless will be tough. If I do go that way (haven't completely decided) I'll carry some Maxxis Freeride tubes (1.2mm) just in case.

Might go with Cinders then. I think I've got a set kicking about in my shed...

BTW - Does anyone know if it's possible to convert a Hope XC hub to a 20mm axle or is it only the Pro 2 and Bulbs that can do that?

I bought some tubes from my LBS and when I got home found they were lightweight tubes, and I don't fancy taking lightweight tubes to the alps. I might have to go to the hated bike shop and get some more beefy tubes tonight as my decent LBS only had the ones that I got in stock.

i've switched to kendas (nevegal/bluegroove combo). cant recommend them enough for sheer grip and the confidence you have in them.

I'll be taking 2.5" high rollers, 42a compound. i wont be doing any climbing whatsoever on them. Might take some nobby nics or small block 8s as spare.

Just called into my LBS and they has a XM823 rim with a Scott tyre on, filled with Stan's latex and a scriber for anyone to stick into the tyre. Now I'm a bit cynical about this sort of stuff since my wife ran over a drawing pin and a slime tube wouldn't reseal so I suck it in until the hole was stretched around the scriber to about 4mm diameter and pulled it out.

Instant seal! Tried again and again, resealed immediately every time.

Genuinely impressed!

Got some Kenda heavy duty tubes, they should do the trick, weigh a tonne though.

Looks like the Alps is the in place this year, loads of forumites going.
