If you're trying to get back into it after a while not drawing, your main problem will most probably be "tightness". Loosen up by starting quite big. Practise really looking at what you want to draw, it amazing how we forget to look, and often concentrate more on the empty page and whats in our head. Try sketching someone like this, look at them, draw them, but dont look at your drawing at all. Just let what your eyes are actually seeing flow straight through to your page, just feeling the lines. You might be pleasantly surprised with what you end up with.
At college we used to loosen up with loads of exercises like this and it really works to tune yourself in. We would have nude models wandering about the room doing 30 second poses so we COULDNT do tight wee drawings. We also used to draw with charcoal taped to the end of long sticks. It all helps with the quality of your lines. And its really good fun.[:D]

Why the block when I have the desire to draw something?
How do I decide what I want to draw?
Should I prepare a few rough drawings then start or just go for it?
Can I have another biscuit?
Forget painting, just can't do it. I'm a bit of a perfectionist even with the drawing if i don't like it even a little bit I'll rip it up and start from scratch.

oops sorry. Edited that at the same time as you posted!
Why the block? Join the club! We all get it. You may be being too precious. Start with cheap paper so you dont mind too much if it goes wrong. The more lines you get down, the better you will get.
Deciding what to draw? Again, join the club! What sort of thing would you actually hang on your wall?
Rough drawings? YES!! Lots of. Mine sometimes end up framed on my wall.
Biscuits?? YES!!!! But not for me, I'm on a diet.[:(]

I would love to go to a life drawing class again. Human bodies are the most fantastic thing to draw. Girls especially.

ME AND MY BIKE
0 -
Not really interested in life drawing as I can't 'do' people in any way.
The problem is I'm self taught and don't even know if I'm doing it right but it looks OK. I won't show any of my work to anyone let alone display it in my house[:I]
Maybe I'll just start messing about and see what happens.Glad to see it's fairly normal to struggle to get started
Thanks Saz,
You've been a big help[:)]

I dont think art is something you're really "taught", well, obviously the basics like perspective and stuff, but its really something that evolves. For something to evolve, you just need to keep doing it. We were taught very little at college, we were just given the environment in which to find our own way.
I find its also a bit like fitness too. I have long periods when I do no work, and I cant then pick up a pencil and produce good work, I have to work myself into it.
Practise it and enjoy it. Good drawing is the basis of all art.[:)]

find an evening class.
they're great for motivation, and it always helps to have someone (teacher) who can correct anything which looks wrong.
failing that, get some nice paper and pencils, or whatever medium you prefer, (i disagree about buying really cheap materials - you want to use something fairly decent if you want decent results. and it's not like it all costs a fortune), and find some photos or pictures you like, and do it that way. i've done some of my best stuff from photos. choose a picture with lots of contrast and interesting shapes, and it'll be easier to get started. bikeybikey0 -

I would never advise buying cheap materials, you are absolutely right. However if your trying to overcome a block, its often because of fear of getting it wrong. The only answer to this is take the plunge and just break into it. Like I said, with every line you draw you will be improving.
Standing in front of a beautiful sheet of clean white handmade paper just adds more pressure and will make it more likely you will be precious and end up with tight overcareful lines.
Try compressed charcoal. It is gorgeous velvety black stuff goes onto the paper really smoothly, regardless of what paper you are using.
And dont use photos. your drawing will be flat. You want to be looking at somethig 3 dimensional. Its the process of discribing 3 dimensions in 2 dimensions that brings drawings to life. Starting with a two dimensional image is pretty pointless. But that is just my opinion obviously.[:)]

Hi Corrie,
Just caught this post a bit late, but I have been having the same problem as you. Really wierd actually!
I haven't drawn much since I finished my degree in 1996, recently I have been feeling the urge to draw/paint quite strongly.
Saz's advice is really good, I used to do similar exercises at art college and you dont need to be really good at drawing people to do a life class, it is more about how you interpret whats in front of you that matters, the shapes, colours movement and light.
I want to do some sort of evening class but they won't start again until September so I will have to wait on that one.
Inspiration wise, I am seeing alot of cool things around me while out on rides. I am quite fascinated with abandoned buildings that I see in the countryside, there are lots of initeresting shapes if you look closely. Must take my camera out more on rides.
Maybe we can get some sort of Forum gallery going when we get pen to paper finally!
Good luck with it!0 -

And dont use photos. your drawing will be flat. You want to be looking at somethig 3 dimensional. Its the process of discribing 3 dimensions in 2 dimensions that brings drawings to life. Starting with a two dimensional image is pretty pointless. But that is just my opinion obviously.[:)]

i don't see why it should look flat.
many professional artists use pictures of their subjects. even sculptors use photos for their sculptures, and they certainly don't look flat. it's how well the artist can interpret it, and what works for that individual. i don't think it's for anyone to tell another artist what they should or shouldn't do. my advice was my own advice, and i was sharing what worked for me. you sound like you must be a very experienced and amazing artist from what you've said - i personally think that some of my results from photos are ok. certainly not flat. maybe not up to your very high standards, but good enough for me to enjoy creating and others to want to display.
anyway - as you were. didn't realise you needed an MA to make suggestions on a bike forum lol. bikeybikey0 -
Lol! Sorry mud, I wasn't trying to be argumentative, just stating my opinion as I said. The whole post wasn't directed at you, just the bit about cheap materials, as I feel you misread me. I just said cheap paper. Your point was a good one and one I'd overlooked as generally shops are full of cheap naff art materials that would not help anyone to produce good work. I forget this as I have access to good quality stuff through my husbands work.
The mention of my degree was surrounded by childish smilies I beleive. I'm obviously NOT very good anyway as I dont sell much work.[:)]

i'm not being funny, but even the big WHSmiths have some reasonable pencils/charcoals etc. well, good enough for practice, anyway, and they're often selling them off half-price. when i said not expensive, i wasn't meaning hand-made paper, i was talking run of the mill good stuff you can buy from art shops, which is fine for sketches etc. for a mere enthusiast like myself anyway.
