I always thought all that "fruity flavour with hints of blueberry, vanilla and oak" rubbish was a bit obnoxious... A good wine tastes like a good wine. There will be different varieties and different kind of "good", but I'll be damned the day I taste an "aftertaste of cuban tobaccoe" in me glass of wine [:D].
I am a bit of a patriot when it comes to reds, and stick to Spanish wines. It is always complicated to choose without knowing the brand, but region and year always give a good indication of quality. Have a 2004 Crianza (crianza: at least 24 months maturity) and a 2000 Reserva (reserva: at least 36 months maturity), both Riojas, that look promising, but I'll have to try them first...

easiest way to check a good "cheap" bottle of wine is to feel the indent in the bottom of the bottle, the deeper the indent usually the better the "cheap" wine. try it?

Got mine from Sainsbury's Dsldude, so I am no Wine nob either [:D]. œ6.5 the crianza and œ10 for the Reserva. Still, would get them cheaper back home... Am in the process of checking the usual wines they have until I find something I like. I did the same with dark chocolates a while ago, and Cote D'or 70% come out on top [;)]
