I repeatedly seem to 'ground out' (as in pedals digging into the dirt) when out riding, what could I do to avoid this?
Is it my technique or are 170mm cranks needed or what? I ride an '06 Mongoose Tyax Super, does anyone know if it has a notoriously low BB height?

Its about normal. Shorter cranks would make a slight difference.

technique is the first thing to consider. shorter cranks do very little to change the pedel rock situation.

Higher volume tyres may help. I think that many bikes ground out every now and again, some are worse than others.

Gonna measure the BB height when I get in. Honestly I don't know what it is it happens loads! I do ride a lot of trails where there is almost a trail 'cut out' of the dirt (if you know what I mean!?) and the slightest change of direction and *thud* I'm on my face!
Any tips on improving technique?!

I bash my pedals on all terrain on all bikes. its scanning the ground and tehnique that matters.

I posted a similar question a few months ago. Trails full of rutts. Tailor-made by the Forestry Comission to be 1cm narrower than the width of my pedals ;-)
Technique is cr@p - but improving.
However, my spech has a low BB. And I was running 1.95 trailrakers at the time. Fitting my olde 2.2 enduros has made a noticable height difference.

Helium! I worked it out once (probably completely wrongly) that the added lift you would get equates to about 9 grams.

How about filling tyres with H2S gas, that way you'd know you've got a puncture pretty fast. Its also roughtly the same weight as air so it wouldn't slow you down too much.

Im sorry but no lift would be created cos of the amount of helium you put into the tyre. If you had the tyre at 1 atmosphere or less, then the tyres would be less dense than air and so would create lift, but 40 PSI....sheesh.... lol, thats a lot of helium. But it would be lighter than normal air tyres, so maybe thats a though for racers???
