As many of you will know halfords is one of the last places to go for a bike how ever i was looking over my dads carrera kraken and i found something spectacular . It has a Hg73 chain (XT) how weird is that it must have been put on by mistake

I disagree.
Halfords is a fairnly reasonable place to go for a bike.
A lot of very skilled people work in Halfords Bike Huts... and their range isn't bad either... and if you want something non-standard, they order it in.

I still rate a decent privately owned shop on top of Halfords, but i give them props for bringing Bikes to the masses.

i suppose but its just the last bike i brought i ended up snap[ping the internals of the fork destroying the freewheel brakes ETC

They make Carreras as much as Specialized make Rockhoppers.

Its something like that. Halfords only have a bad rep because of a couple of the branches have complete retards in. My local halfords is pretty good, the head of bikehut knows a hell of alot about bikes. He's done allsorts, even serviced a pair of 02 Shivers, which apparently are stupidly hard to do.

Its the same with most things, if theres a small minority that are bad, most of time the entire thing will get a bad name. Kind of like America, [:D].

Halfords don't do bikes i brought one last year and it lasted 2 weeks and they said i had wridden it to hard on easy bridle ways when we took it back

Yeah I think the last year Merida made them was 03 but you are right in that they were made by them.

my local halfords are a bunch of window lickers they've been flogging a storm breaker for 3 or 4 years for 2 grand even though everything is out-dated and is covered in chips, it also has boxxers up front and a brandless japaneese shock on the back! The mind boggles. dont start me on their build quality

my halford are stocking good ish bikes now they have top spec konas top spec gts and carreras they have got rid of most of their saracens

the one thing i will say is beacause i dont know how to tune the rear gears i took it to halfords many of times. i took it to a private owned shop and i didnt have any problems after that

That would be a Stormbringer you mean and being as it is a Merida frame you shouldn't really have doubts about the build quality.

I'd say it's more because until they started this bikehut thing, and started it properly, /no/ halfords had bike-knowledgeable staff it, no halfords had relevant or good stock, and so it was generally impossible to get any decent parts or advice from a Halfords.
Now they've done the Bikehut, generally each one has at least one person who knows what he's talking about. But they still only tend to attract the bottom end of potential bike shop people. The kind of people who've been sacked from bike shops, or who can't get a job in a bike shop yet but want relevant experience. And it shows.

Also, as long as their primary focus is on shifting as many œ70 full suspension abominations as possible, I see no reason to trust any advice they might give.
