Crap forks, 'V' brakes, no disc ready hubs, so œ200+ extra for discs.
Not as good value as a Carrera Fury, GT Avalanche, Giant XTC 4.5, Merlin Malt 1, Mongoose Tyax Super or a Claude Butler Cape Wrath D27.

Bikes that are good value are in my previous post.

Good condition and a cracking bike, I'm going to be very sad to see it go. I bought it last year for œ1000 after reading lots of very good reviews on various web sites and mags, everything they say about this bike is true, it's excellent.0 -
Carrera Fury.

Can't go wrong with GT Avalanche. If your mate is looking to upgrade soon go for the '07 as he might want to change the forks and brakes but the frame is lighter, go for a '06 model if not upgrading too soon, as the brakes should be Hayes and rockshox forks.(in my opinion they should be better than the tektro brakes and suntour forks on the '07)
(Actually don't know if the frame is lighter but it is a different frame for 2007)0 -
Have a look at the commencal, I've forgotten what its called but it will be easy enough to find out. It has nicely stocked parts with Sram sx-5 shifters and mechs and avid juicy 3s.
EDIT Here it is, I've nothing better to do.

Dude, did you trace that, from a distance off a diagram drawn by a blind man using his feet from the description given to him by someone that could only use English quotes from the movie of 'Grease'?

I'd also be tempted to add the Decathlon Rockrider 8.1 which has a stunning spec for £4990
-
Looks very good, I am popping into our local Decathlon to have a butchers of this machine. I'll get some pics and see if they will let me give it a quick spin.
Gravityengine makes some superb choices there. The Commencal is the Combi Disc.0 -
I'm very impressed with the Rockrider, if I had £500 its where my money would be going.0
-
Same here, impressed with them all really. The 200 quid one is a superb machine.0
-
agreed SS, seriously going to consider one of the £500+ ones when I change0
-
I’m pretty new to MTB’s but for what I’ve seen out there I’d sooner get a bike with a good frame over spec. as its cheaper to replace the bits than a new frame and I do not believe in market hype with tones of adds that’s why I would not touch Specialized or GT. But have you had a look at the felt Q720 or the Giant xtc 4.5 at lease you will not be a sheep and follow the herd.0
-
The SCOTT SCALE 70 at £499 has got possibly the lightest frame below 500 quid.
O.K. its got v-brakes, but has disc compatible hubsReal men keep it RIGID !!0 -
See if you can find an 06 Claud Butler Cape Wrath, fitted with Rock Shox Dart 3's and Hayes 9 brakes.0
-
Its not about following the herd, its getting a bike that suits you at a good price for many in this price bracket. GTs budget frames are some of the best on the market. Plus not everyone wants to upgrade over time, they want something that works well out of the box. No point having a good frame and hanging crap off it, and most Felt frames are very rigid.0
-
You can get the 2006 Saracen Zen 1 for £500 on Activesport.co.uk - Deore, Hydraulic discs, 130mm travel forks0
-
I'd say buy the bike with best frame on you can afford for money, then upgrade in time as you need to or when parts wear out. I bought a Rockhopper std 3 yrs ago with v brakes and frame is excellent, have since upgraded and still v happy with it. No point upgrading on a poor frame with good bits on it.Boardman HT Comp 2012>
Spesh Rockhopper 2004 - 20120 -
Carrera Fury is great, the fork is amazing for the price, rockshox tora 85 - 130 mm travel......................................................................................

What do you think of the frame on the Giant xtc 4.5?The Prince
'RIDE HARD, RIDE HARDTAIL'0 -
The XTC frames are very good - light, stiff (maybe overly stiff) and very much XC, designed around 80-100mm of travel.0
-
Cheers Supersonic
I am looking at getting one.
It seems to be the best frame and best specced bike for general XC for £500 out there, plus I loved riding it.

Thats what matters really, that you tested it and liked it. Does have some good parts too, and as you say, one of the best frames you'll find at this money (weighs 3.9lbs for an M)0
-
the frame on the xtc4.5 seems to be different to the rest of the frames in the XTC range,
its something i notice the other day when i was having a look at a lbs
in fact it seems identical to the last seasons frame,
i dunno if any1 else has noticed this,0 -
Is it lighter or heaver than other xtcs? The Prince

GT Avalanche 1.0 disc. Even better if you can find a 2006 model.
