I don't limit myself to child abductions, I find most sensitive topics are worthy of puns, and I don't see child abduction as any worse than other issues in the world.

Yes, if it was my daughter, of course I wouldn't laugh. But if my daughter died and was given a 'Darwin award' I wouldn't find that funny either. Personal relationship to an issue changes things quite dramatically, but most issues are of no relative interest to any of us at all. The fact that the media chooses to guilt us into becoming emotionally involved in things that 100 years ago you wouldn't even know happened is the only thing that puts these topics in the light to be joked about.

If I were horrifically murdered, I wouldn't expect a random from Manchester/Norway/Wherever to give a damn, but I'd imagine the people that new me would

Well, each to their own opinion, but in my view a case like this or the Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman or the Sarah Payne murders or ANY child abduction is no laughing matter.

And even though I did not know these children personally, this does not stop me from feeling somewhat sad.

Obviously I have a very different sense of humour.

I know it sounds harsh, but by and large I honestly do feel great indifference for these stories, whether that be a sad reflection on some of my own opinions is for St Peter to debate when the time comes (not religious, as it happens, but seemed a nice way of putting it).

So what if the media has "force fed" us those stories, they are still real and traumatic. I would care just as much about a story that has been publicised as one which hadnt.

And obviously we dont care as much about the girl as their parents/family etc but we can still be affected and upset by it, just in different ways
