Engine braking

Does it hurt your transmission? I don't mean anything stupid, just dropping it a gear or two before a corner, that sort of thing.

How do you mean to drive without doing it? I imagine that sitting with the clutch in whilst you go round the corner is not only dangerous, but (probably) more damaging than engine braking. I may be wrong though.0
-
tis normal.
as long as you are 1 not forcing the engine to over rev. 2 are not using the clutch to get the correct engine spead.

Nick what do you mean buy "not using the clutch to get the correct engine speed"? When I downshift for a corner, I put the clutch in and brake a bit, change gear, put a bit of revs on then slowly let the clutch out, so the revs can pick up to the right speed. Is that bad? If you let the clutch out really quickly, the car "jerks" as it slows, which would I suspect mean it is having alot of strain on the transmission0
-
if your engine revs are too low when you start lifting the clutch you will force the engine revs up (more noticable on a front engined front wheel drive) while on a rear wheel drive what tends to happen is the rear wheels lose contact and the back end breaks away.

Driving instructors actually teach their students to use engine braking when cornering. I assume he means riding the clutch (holding it around the biting point and not letting the clutch all the way up after changing gear) for "not using the clutch to get the correct engine speed", which will wear the clutch out. I could be wrong though, he could mean something completely different.

its pretty much impossible to lock wheels while gearing down. which is probably why its being taught. although, gearing down too much/fast can spin the car.
you're supposed to gear down and let the clutch fully engage, the engine will naturally slow down, slowing the car [:)] you shouldn't do any damage to the engine unless you gear down too much and let the engine over rev.

I was taught to brake first then change down when your at a comfortable speed for the gear you want, meaning i'll come up to a roundabout in 4th or 5th (slowly & without accelerating) and then change down to 2nd/3rd if it's clear or 1st if i need to stop.

or as you're braking, nudge the throttle to bring the engine up to speed and shift down, so you spend more time in gear (read: in control) and not coasting

Heel toe FTW! Before I retired the car to the garage I had to learn this skill so that I didn't stall everytime the car came to a stop [:p] (dodgy condensor or something I think, certainly not the idle being set too low!)
But yeah, I tend to use engine braking in conjunction with standard braking. As Nick said, don't force the engine to over rev, and don't partially dip the clutch or whatever because you'll soon be smelling your clutch plate!!0 -

It is very easy to lock the wheels on a rear wheel drive car.
You should never slip the clutch, it wears it out. You should be judging the upshifts (let the revs fall then engage the clutch) and the downshifts (blipping the throttle to match the revs to the gearbox/wheel speed)

Tbh, the only "engine braking" that's worth doing is when you point the car downhill. Won't work on pokey little petrols though.
If you're changing your speed for a corner, do it by coming off the throttle earlier or use your brakes. That way you keep your clutch fresh and if you're slowing down quickly, you're letting the guy behind know you're slowing.
I used to do a lot of engine braking until i had a good think about it, and thought "indignity of braking Vs indignity of having to have a new clutch, or having someone hear me change up like some boy racer train spotter"
Braking seemed better.
