Anything bigger than a 1.4 will be stupid money to insure if it's a first car. (I'm assuming you're 17/18)
Even if it's a diesel 1.9 is pushing it.

If I were you, I'd spend œ1k max of that on the car, and spend the rest insuring it, but then you may have more money for insurance, I dunno.
Although as it's a first car, you're likely to crash/rag it. Most people I know have bought cars for œ300/400 so if they crash, they can just buy anther rather than push their insurance costs through the roof (unless someone needs to claim).

Oh yeah, and when I was looking a 1.4 model with 3 doors was less expensive to insure than a 1.2 with 5 doors. 3 doors are the way to go.

Just make sure youget a sept'99+ one though, or you'll end up with an engine that'll go pop. The pre 99 ones had internals from the NASP deisel....duh...

Insurance group 5 for a 1.9td is not too expensive and not much more than group 1 car really, its gona be expensive whatever it is seeing as your a new driver. And besides there are hardly any good cars below group 5 and if you want as nippy, but as cheap as poss to insure id say the 306 would be way to go, pulls well and will leave polos, saxo 1.1 etc and yes dare i say it a hyundai accent

for dust. Make sure its a gud un tho.

don't get an old-style megane whatever you do. I've heard the engine's only held in by one bolt. don't know about the new style though, although they have got a stupid arse.

Are you really stupid enough to think that a multi million pound, hugely experienced car company don't know what they're doing with regards to car design, engineering and production?

It may well be that the engine is only directly bolted to the car in very few places. However, if it's likely to fall out, I can't help but think it would never have got past quality control/crash testing.....
