Sony Vs. Church of England

So, the Church of England are mildly displeased that Sony have produced a game with a gun battle staged in (a virtual version of) Manchester Cathedral. The Church have asked Sony to apologise, pay them a wad of cash and withdraw the game from sale (despite it already selling a million copies). The problem for the Church is that Sony have done nothing illegal and therefore are not required to take any remedial action.

Tony Blair has apparently made negative comments towards Sony regarding the situation (since the Church realised they were stuffed), which to me just awakened a fading piece of news.

If anything this is fantastic advertising for Sony, I definately want to play this game now depsite not even knowing what it is about.

Any thoughts?

I think it's distasteful for Sony to stage the game in Manchester Cathedral, rather than "a" generic Cathedral. However, I recognise that Sony are in a winning situation, and as I'm not a Christian or a great gamer, the story interests me very little.

This sums it up pretty well
ON a more serious note, I see no reason as to why a fictional game involving aliens would displease a religion.

Well I ordered a medium 2005 one but they emailed me saying that it wasn't in stock, but that the small frame size was.

However, the only small size Torrent that they *appear* to have in stock is the 2006. So I'm not exactly sure which one i'm going to end up with...It's quite exciting actually.

Well, there is no longer a copyright on the building. Iirc copyright on buildings only lasts for the life of the architect plus 70 years.
If only the church would learn about fiction. Oh, wait.

You just have to wonder what would have happened to Sony if they'd chosen to use the Finsbury Park mosque instead...

Personally, I find it pretty distasteful. Regardless of what you children might think about the idea of God, some people's beliefs are sacred to them. Censorship of any kind is something I disagree with and so I don't think the game should be pulled from sale, but I think the developers showed a major lack of respect in coming up with the idea in the first place.

Well you can get a "girlfriend", and you can then watch them go at it, albeit from outside a house.

However the idiot programmers actually did make an explicit scene, decided it was too extreme, and changed the camera. The hot coffee mod just lets you see into the house, and theres also an amusing but very wrong mini game included.

Much more controversial that a shooting in Cathedral I think.

As far as I'm concerned it's a load of mooooooo!!.

The Church of england are upset, because apparently it encourages gun culture, along with Mothers against gun crime. I don't think killing aliens constitutes encouraging gun culture. Plus the fact that the game is 18 rated, means that it really isn't aimed at those who would be most vulnerable.

The church should shut up about such a petty issue and get back to doing the really positive work that is does best.

I think the church are right to be upset. They clearly weren't given permission to use the cathedral and to me, it does seem morally wrong that a church should be used in the context of the game.

....and from what I've seen on the news, the game looks like a heap of junk anyway.

I heard of the game like two weeks ago because i was thinking of buying a PS3, and on amazon you can get the game for cheap.
THen i had a look at how much money i had and it was 19.67p [:(]

I thought the CofE were unhappy at the desecration of a (virtual representation of a) church?

I can kind of see where they are coming from. Churches have almost universally been places of safety and refuge, sidestepped by war and killing: In the middle ages, a fugitive who hid in a church was not allowed to be forcibly expelled for forty days.
It has been almost universally enforced, too. I don't recall any account of anyone fighting their way /through/ a church. Sieges have happened, but it's generally accepted that armed soldiers do not enter churches in anger.

And, after these hundreds of years of that, I think they've got a right to be a bit startled at someone setting a shoot-em-up game not just in /a/ church, but in a specific one.

IIRC there was a level in MOH:AA that had a bombed church you had to fight through. No-one noticed then.

Well i have the game, played it, went through the church, happily killed all the aliens and finished the game. Doesn't bother me it was set in a real church which happens to be my home town as well!

Oh and one other thing, why are the church suing Sony when Insomniac Games developed it?

The Church of England are completely right.
Sony shouldn't have done that, since it constitutes guns, and using them to shoot aliens/mutants to protect earth.
In the alien/mutant apocalypse, the soldiers should just let the aliens/mutants destroy the church.
The kiddy fiddling priests should be shi<s></s>t scared though, since when the apocalypse does come, they're going straight down.
