You have an engineering background, try getting work at Sellafield on the Cumbrian coast, you can buy anything from flats, terrace housing, new builds, etc on the west coast for very reasonable money compared to most of the rest of the UK, just stay outside the magic yellow line on the map.

i live in a 3 bed semi with garage, conservatory, big gardens etc in south lakes area, valued now around œ120 thou'. my mate lives a 3 minute drive from me, but inside the national park - he cannot put up a conservatory, isn't allowed a garage unless it has a slate tiled roof and painted wooden doors, and lives in a small 2 bedroom semi with a postage stamp garden - cost him more than œ100 thou more !![V]

I can see mountains out of every window, apart from the side of the house that faces the sea. Yes, it is a long way from just about anywhere - but that is it's greatest strength

Woowee this becoming a nice thread now! Thanks to all for your replys!

I quite like the Shrewsbury idea, my Dad lives there so it may be good.

Im not too fussed about night life, Im not into it really and Im sure more people would put me off even more.

As for that house at œ172,000 lmao, we'd maybe get half that for this one and this one of the higher valued houses round here! (I know there are loads of things we can do to sort a better mortgage and Id rather not go through them all in this thread)

Walsal also keeps popping up. As does Pennines. Im not too fussed about the coast, seen enough rotten chassis to do me a lifetime!

What sort of job prospects are there for an experianced mechanic/painter/storeman with no paper work?!

    Thanks again guys!

    walsal wtf?

anywhere in scotland is perfect, I'd say edinburgh but for 80k you could't get a shoe box up there.

i know its probably a finished discussion, but south end of county durham. cheap housing on the whole, and only hour and half (max) from the lakes and the scottish borders. even closer to the yorkshire moors and the wear valley is on your door-step. as is the tess valley. many forests, hills, etc for riding.
  • black isle scotland grate countryside but not far from inverness and not an island

    Staffordshire.

Hour from wales, hour from the peaks, awesome transport links, awesome local riding.

    Expensive though.

    Huddersfield.

    Middle of the Pennines.
    30 Mins east to Leeds.
    30 Mins west to Manchester
    30 mins south to Sheffield

Northwards, theres bugger all but moors and sheep till you hit scotland :)
Why is it uphill BOTH ways?

North Sheffield. CLose to the M1, Meadowhall, Leeds, Manchester, but also on the door to the pennines and peak district. I live two miles from Wharncliffe, and the local trails are fantastic.

Guildford - right on the Surrey Hills/North Downs, can walk from the high street to the countryside in 10 minutes, 35 mins by train into London, close to Heathrow & Gatwick

    It is expensive though...

Second the Black Isle - my uncle lives there and it's a lovely place.

Is it just me or do quotes not work?

On the other hand I live in East Dunbartonshire and it's apparently the best place for raising a family (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6564215.stm). Milngavie would be quite nice - 20 minutes from Glasgow city centre in the car or train yet the countryside is right on your doorstep with the West Highland Way.

You may laugh but Morecambe. Nice sea views and surrounding countryside. 30-40 mins from the Lakes - the best cycling in the country. Relatively cheap housing but seen as a property hotspot right now. It's been regenerated - Urban Splash are opening an hotel here. Next to Lancaster - booming Uni city. On the M6 and main North South railway line. Out the way but you can commute to Preston, Blackburn, Bolton, Manchester.

You can buy a palace up here, trust me. Get in before the prices start to shoot up any more from London investors. Worth a look!
