Where to live (in UK)

My Missus and I have been thinking about moving for a while now but I dont want to end up somewhere else that sucks. I grew up in Stourbridge, West Midlands, wouldnt mind living there again but I hear its not the nicest of places anymore. Id like to find somewhere central but without loads of people, if you see what I mean. Top of the Pennines maybe. Would rather buy a house, but being that we wouldnt get much for this one in comparison to mainland prices we may just have to take what we can get.
Just fire a list fo UK places at me and some good reasons to live there and I'll pick it apart bit by bit.

Bath, for the same reason. Expensive though.
Or the Lake District. Uber expensive though.

Sometimes it overheats. You have to make sure it's in a ventilated place all the time.

Walsall.
It's a fucking corr blimeyhole, but you get to live in the same place as me, which adds on about a billion points in any kind of formula you can come up with for where to live.0 -
Staffordshire.
Hour from wales, hour from the peaks, awesome transport links, awesome local riding.
Expensive though.

Everywhere is expensive in this country. Move abroad. But not to Spain.

Reet proper yorkshire like! Middle of the pennines, North wales about 90 minutes away, lake district not too far too...

Bath if you want somewhere quiet but central(-ish) to people. That or just out of cardiff?

Cardiff / South Wales
Cardiff's one of the fastest growing city's in Europe, the economy is jumping so employment shouldn't be a problem, OK manufacturing has taken a dive (where hasn't?) but almost every other industry is flying.
Because of insane levels of home building going on house prices haven't gone completely insane compared to other places as long as you avoid the City centre and the bay.
Cwmcarn - 45mins
Afan - 60mins
Brecfa - 90mins
It's a great night out if you're into your binge drinking, loads of LBSs, oh and a great big mock medieval castle in the middle of town.
But the reason why I love living here is that you can be stood in the middle of the city and in 15 mins in the countryside.

If you want the pennines, stay on the east side, over on't west side we get more rain. FACT!

Just live on the outskirts of a major area, like Alex does, Staffs is just out of Brum really, so it has the good transport links etc but none of the heroin addicts.

Thanks for all the replys. Now to answer some:
London's way too crowded. Bath is too expensive although quite nice.
Yes I have a job (but Ive been advised to leave it) I was a mechanic and painter for 6 years and now Im parts dept manager, I used to run a bicycle repair and trade sideline and Im doing an IT Apprenticeship, plus I'll do any work really, Id like to think getting a job won't be too tricky.
I like the honesty of the Walsall representative.
Staffordshire sounds quite good. Not keen on Oxford or moving abroard.
Middle of the 'Nines is more my kinda thing! Scottish boarders almost makes sense, but Im just so fed up with living in Scotland.

The Lake District, I'd never move away, not without the intention of coming back at some point.

Lake disrict ( but its uber expensive ) And if its places like Keswick the riding is great but you have loads of cragrats. Grisedale ( sp? ) would be nice, Yorkshire boarder close to lakes and good ridign in grisedale forest.

Bedfordshire.
it's within commuting distance to London.
Chicksands and Woburn are local
it's fairly central
it has no tourists because there's nothing particularly here

Not the Scottish borders despite the excellent riding and scenery. Most places are a bit too remote and out of reach of major cities for me.
St. Andrew's would be a nice place to live. Really nice town with great beaches. Not sure whether there is much mountain biking though.

Torquay, lots of slamming hotties and pretty good night life. Driving distance to Dartmoor, and we have the sea as well!

Actually yes, don't come to Devon. House prices are insane enough as it is. œ500,000 for a 3 bedroom terrace house in Salcombe. What a joke.
