from my minimal knowledge of the empire, human rights got in the way as much as a change of politics.
for some reason it was deemed unreasonable to go around enslaving other countries

Back to the point about a dictatorship.
Surely the problem then is having a leader who is going to do what is best for the people.
In a dictatorship with no opposition a dictatorisn't necessarily going to do what is best for the people, more what is best for himself as he knows that he cannot be removed from power by political means.
Therefore a dictatorship cannot be an answer.
(Correct me if I'm talking mooooooo!!)

Benevolent dictatorship is far and away the best method of government, they issue is finding a suitable benevolent dictator. The idea is that the dictator is an honest and good person who cares and thinks for others. I'd be a good dictator, kind of [;)]

get rid of entertainment licenses and get rid of The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994 Sections 63, 64 & 65,66 and 67 Raves. I can hardly put into words how wrong that law is.

Not really.
Like I said, 'pure' democracy doesn't work - you cannpt call a vote on _every_ decision that is to be made (you'd end up in circles voting on how the elections work, for a start). So we employ people who we believe to be most likely to act or vote in our interests.

That depends on how you define democracy.
It could just be a lack of records (sceptics/cynics do tend to be the first forgotten), but it does seem that it's taken until the end of the 19th century for the democratic system to truly be exploited.
I know there are a number of other reasons for it, but the major root seems to be the power of private companies, and therefore their power over politicians.
I'm not trying to claim any sort of conspiracy, but any right-minded person is going to do more of what gets them more money and less of what doesn't. If that means pandering to big business, that's what I'd expect civil servants to do (though I'd really rather they didn't).
We've now got, and have had at least since at least the beginning of this government no real opposition. There are no interesting debates. There's two major parties, each trying to be as central as possible, and another that never really seems to manage to matter. There's no point even trying to get interested in that - no party holds its position long enough to get propaganda defending it out, let alone long enough to get people to want to vote in their favour. The recent elections in France have really highlighted how far we've fallen from a leader in government - we've no real choice, and as a result we've no real voters. It seems that the large majority of people who vote only vote because they did last time, and their choice of candidate is based as much on who they voted for last time and their class as anything else.

actually i was refering to the fact that women havent had the vote for 100 years, if half the population cant vote thats not a democracy in my book.

Oh yeah, there is that...
I have a scary habit of forgetting that fact. It's one of those things I just take for granted as happens, and so presume it must always have happened, I suppose.
