I used to have XT cranks with a seperate bottom bracket, and to be honest I thought they were the mutts nuts. Course then I got a set of these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=9766. I rode up to 250 miles a week on these and these were so much better than the XT's. Stiffer so less effort was wasted and not one damaged chainring. Anyone else tried these?
P.s. I love racing singletrack, uphill, downhill, road, etc so I'd like to think I gave them a good workout.

Tis true what they say about rapidly wearing chainrings! Had my Xt for about 2 1/2 weeks now and after about 200 miles the outer ring is starting to look very secondhand already, with 2 chipped teath and quite a few very scratched ones. But as mentioned previousely the crank set is absolutely fantastic! I couldn't beleave how much faster i went after they were fitted, and they are the same length- i had to check!

I would like to change the outer ring only to a Middleburn hardcoat, but i have only been able to find it as part of a set. Anyone know where i can get an outer only from? Also how do i determine if my chainline is correct?

    Cheers,

    Andy.
  • I have the lx hollowtech and i can say its great. No problems at all and feels stiff and responsive, i am not a light rider and i have confidence in this crank

Middleburn rings can be found on crc, i just bought an outer and middle the inner seems to be lasting a bit better.

Always remember to pick your Uni according to the local trails or you'll be stuck with nowhere to ride for three years!

Might be too late if you've ordered your chainring(s) now but BETD are clearing stock on their chainrings so you can get an XT compatible outer from them for œ15.
I've just ordered some myself for a couple of baddly shartoothed outer rings I've got.

Thanks, but they are designed for single chainring use only and do not have shifting ramps. I will be getting an easyshift one to make shifting as smooth as possible, but i am going to wait till the current one is completely knackered. It's still shifting smoothly at the momnent.

    Cheers,

    Andy.

Will Race Face chainrings fit the XT cranks? Just been mucking about and the team graphics rings look really nice.

    Hi there..

I chew through chainrings like a cow grass..I am 18 stone with legs like tree trunks..I have used XT.FSA afterburner..LX..and now middleburn.

The middleburn hardcoat slickshift are chewing and chipping after 3 rides in the chiltern mud.
In my personal experience go for the middleburn outer and granny rings and stick with a steel middle ring like the LX.
The middle ring takes all the crap and if you are a heavy rider who clunks through the gears on climbs then dump the alloy chainrings and go for steel..

The middle ring is still like new at the moment. I am trying to loose weight and mostly use the outer and stomp up the hills in the hardest gear i can stand, so that is probably why mine has worn so fast.

I love your Enduro by the way. Might have to consider one of those.

Thanks for the thumbs up to my spesh...great all round bike..i just changed it from that setup to a more freeride setup for afan at the weekend will post some pics of that.As for the front mech and rear mech being set up right....yup..no problems there..its just part and parcel of big legs / alloy rings..

Gotta live with the fact that i go through components a little bit sooner than people with less body to haul up hills..

Hone are only ever so slightly heavier than LX and a damn site stiffer..
I have the FSA afterburner that allegedly costs œ150 - œ200 almost 2 and a half times more than the Hone and thats actually 30g more still..

Hone is a real decent crank and allegedly they have sorted the chocolate chainring problem. The small chainring is steel and the two bigger rings are aluminium.
Expect to change aluminium chainrings twice a year if you go out twice a week and in wet weather. This is my personal experience

Going by that theory it is going to be expensive for me then, i do 18 miles 5 days a week! Oh well, the pounds are falling off so it's all good. Will need a whole new wardrobe soon though!
