La Vuelta 2024:-Stage 6: Jerez de la Frontera – Yunquera, 185.5km ***Spoilers***

Reminds me of the headstart Carapaz got in the Giro.

I don't understand this stage.

Reminded me of Virenque's medium mountain stage win in the 2004 tour.
My memory of that day was him taking yellow but those pesky facts suggest that his win took him ahead of every serious GC contender.
Anyhow my take away was: medium mountain stages FTW.

Only saw the finish - can't quite understand how O'Connor can be allowed that - wtf were Bora doing? Ok maybe they fancy Roglic can take 5 minutes back but do you really want to have to - especially with others in contention you need to think about so if O'Connor is dropped you can't just ride hard to the finish irrespective.

Team politeness. "You chase", "No, after you", "No, please, I insist", "What about the other guys?", "No, you first"...
🤣🤣🤣
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

It will be interesting to see how Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale decide to ride over the coming days..... try and go on the front and try and control the race or just sit on Roglic/Bora.

I'd pick option B.
But then Bora would just send someone up the road so back to square one. No easy wins.

I guess it depends on how UAE & Red Bull race. If they ride as if they're all in for their leaders AG2R will have an easier time than if they fire off plausible alternative race winners up the road.
Either way, I think Felix is in for a busy few days.

Fewer than 40 riders finished in that 'peloton' with Roglic. I think I'm right in saying that no team had more than 3 riders. I suspect that had a lot to do with it.

My thinking is that Roglic definitely wants this. An alternative Bora winner won't be acceptable to him.

Agree but it would be funny AF to see Vlasov disappear off the front leaving Roglic with his head in his hands baby sitting O'Connor to the line.

But would that happen? Remember how pissed off Roglic seemed to be (and reluctant to cooperate) with letting Kuss win last year.

Of course not. He'd either be on the radio demanding permission to attack O'Connor asap or on the phone to his agent demanding a transfer to Bahrain of Astana for next year.

Bora say that they thought having Lipowitz in the break would scare the other GC teams into working, but O'Connor was just too strong. Personally I think that's a pretty weak card at the best of times, let alone when a genuine proven GC contender is up the road

Ah, but finishing is not the same as letting the break go in the first place. I only watched the last 5 kms though.

If you have the leader's jersey then you are responsible for controlling the race. It's an unwritten rule, but one that is respected by all teams.

He wouldn't have evaded The Pog.

And a load of nonsense IMO. Just ride to win whatever it takes.

Well that's true, but if you're a team that has aspirations for the leader's jersey long term then there obviously comes a point where you acknowledge that the jersey-holder's team either can't or won't do what's needed and take matters into your own hands. Shooting yourself in the foot re winning the race and justifying it by "Well the leader's team didn't do anything either" feels somewhat amateur to me.
Big caveat of course is that other teams may simply not have had the legs to do what they wanted to do.

It's a lot easier to win a controlled race than it is an uncontrolled one.

Always ride as fast as you can. Sorted.

The leaders team controls the race.
Except on sprint days, when the sprint teams do.
Or on puncheur days, where puncheur teams do.
Or on days when they're happy to let a break up the road that they don't think is a threat.
Or on days where they're happy to see the bonus seconds taken by the break, but challengers aren't.
But otherwise, yeah.
Mainly they ride at the front because it's a privilege to stay out of trouble and not have to fight for position too much. How much work they actually do there is up to them.

That would be OK as, based on last year, Roglic would chase.

On the evidence of what happened last time Bora sent a man up the road and he didn't chase (yesterday) I reckon it would probably be for the best

I'm gonna say something really controversial.
Ben O'Connor isn't a threat. He could have a 15 minute lead at this stage and still wouldn't win.

I'm wondering if Roglic is actually confident of his ability to winthis year. I didn't pick him for PTP as it was unclear if he'd recovered from injury and he was complaining about a sore back the other day (although he is apparently well known for saying he's in pain then performing well).

And I am going to asking something really obvious.
Why?

Contrarians are going to be contrary.

Someone had to step in for Rick, who doesn't bother with the Vuelta

I was wondering how big a lead he needs with TTs and MTFs to come. 5 mins could be enough, might not.
