I thought it was harsh. Wout came up the inside, Philipsen shut the door, as anyone would.

Yesterday wasn't exactly a regulation sprint, either. A number of pundits felt that his violent swing from one side of the road to the other might have merited a demotion.
Cav had already made the same maneuver, but as Jackie Durand highlighted, it was clear that Cav first checked that he wasn't going to impede anyone.
Also, maybe the fact that there was a barrier collision yesterday, may have influenced the jury today?
Philipsen seems to sprint with blinkers on. There has been, or nearly been a crash involving him on at least 5 separate occasions during the past two Tours.
Perhaps the jury felt that sending him a message was overdue.

This was before the deviation.
Moving right from there is worth relegation.

Never mind Philipsen. You are never going to believe what's happened in the Lanterne Rouge.

You can actually see the barriers narrowing in that, they're definitely not straight

Just watching series 2 episode 3 of the Netflix series and the Bordeaux finish that Cav almost won.
Philipsen made exactly the same move on Biniam Grimay, as he made today, only significantly worse. There was a protest, but as we know, nothing came of it.
It even mirrored today by having WVA comment about riders making risky moves because they can usually get away with it…

Not sure about that, there was a clear gap there that he shut whilst Wout was trying to go through. It's the sort of thing the new yellow card system is supposed to penalise I would say.
