I think that's over-playing it a bit. As he says, they know what the time cut will be, they know what they need to do, there was no point in going harder than that

Think it's a bit of both. He was clearly in a bad way early on and that's got to be a worry. On the other hand the team worked to dig him out of the physical hole, stabilised the time losses, and then managed the time gap pretty well. He actually seemed to come across the line in fairly good shape in the end, which perhaps backs up the idea it was an acute thing rather than an illness. We'll know more tomorrow, and especially on Monday.

There were times where he looked to be struggling to hold the teams wheels early on. Renshaw said it was heat related and I suspect that was all it was as he seemed to pick up and manage the gap from the midpoint of the stage when it was apparently a bit cooler.

It's certainly possible to have a bad day on the bike and feel quite ill due to heat and be fine the next day. He may just need a few days to acclimatise.
