Yeah well I'm glad I didn't make time for it now.

Can we have threads telling us when to stop watching highlights instead of when to start?

Have they not broadcast it right from the start in previous years?

It’s never had whole race coverage.
Until a couple of years ago, it was only the last 50-60kms.

They showed the women's race, plus some post race analysisi and then cut to the men's race on ES yesterday.

A lot of comment around whether this should be considered a monument. I'm not really fussed but it does make me think what a shame we haven't established a race in the uk. We had the "cycling boom" and huge crowds for quite low level races but nothing has stuck.

Needs to be a lot older.
If you add on distance then you need to find something flat and non-gravel at the start. All the monuments have a far more gentle beginning. Strade Bianche is hitting gravel sections within 10km, that's why everyone was cooked with 80km to go

The problem being that they extended this edition to 215Km, but in doing so, it meant that the riders were also faced with 4000 metres of climbing.
They could add another 35kms, but can they make it harder?
What do they do in terms of the sterrato and hills, other than have them more spread out?
Yesterday, almost half the riders didn't finish and 4 riders were OTL.

What are you actually trying to achieve with lengthening it further, other than matching the monuments for distance? What is this impact you want? They were cooked before the TV pictures arrived yesterday.

Rewards different kind of ability.
There’s a reason top riders like Hushovd never managed to be competitive over 220km.
Dr Ferrari used to go on about how races increasingly only test the “engine” (talking more about GTs tbf), testing their hour long power - either the final climb or TT - and not the “fuel tank” because of the dwindling number of stages over 220km.
Similar applies to one day races

The race was fine as it was; mixing classics riders, GT riders along with CX & XCO winners all capable of winning. Now they extended it and made it harder it's looking like it's more a climbers race......
The current 5 'Monuments' are all races of their time - late 19/early 20th century......And should stay that way.
However, Strade Bianchi was perfectly fine as it was - no need to turn it into something it isn't. It doesn't need to be 250km to be a great race...it's 2024, the distance of 186km was perfectly fine for the modern times we now live in.

Doesn’t help that when they’ve had decent quality one day races over here they’ve been on shite courses. The Wincanton Classic had some stinkers, Ride London was OK and had a decent iconic finish line but wasn’t testing enough. We could have some superb one day races over here if the money was there and people ignored the car lobby complaining they can’t get to the garden centre for Sunday lunch.

Basically. If Pog wasn't there it would be wellens pidcock and mohoric duking it out

But it does that already now. Pidcock said he'd eaten all the way through the race and didn't want to have to eat again that day.
Almost all the top ten (other than kiddies) have scored top tens in monuments, WC or WT races over 250km (Amstel, Bretagne Classic ), so we know these are riders with fuel tanks.

Is there space in the Spring calendar for another race to be considered a monument?

What was wrong with it before?

My view, distance aside, is it’s too early in the season. There is a reason why mvdp and wva skipped it

A lot of comment about whether it is even a classic or some kind of novelty chipper.

They should have left it alone. It wanted for nothing.

I would love to hear more about what happened before the live coverage started as the race was already in bits by then

I gather UAE rode hard, ripped it up, and then Pogacar went and did his thing once the cameras were live. Just like he said he would. Couldn't say they weren't warned.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0
