So that's what happens when a 54" mains water pipe bursts and then there's a big freeze.

How big are the hoops for context? Hula hoops range between 38 and 42 inches, apparently.

Sadly it isn't that rare. I would assume this is a en ex-partner who murdered her. Two women a week in the UK are murdered by parners and ex-partners in the UK. Many of them are known to Police and basically ignored until the worst happens.

That explains why there are less in the packets.

Yeah, I hadn't even considered the impossibility of jumping through those crispy hoops.

He's had an extended asthma attack today and is in critical condition. I suspect they'll be getting in supplies of smoky wood as I type...

Pope Francis in ‘critical condition’ after suffering severe respiratory crisis | The Independent
Definitely getting last days of Queen Lizzie vibes...
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

There was an old lady whom I knew who at age 99ish ended up in hospital during the pandemic with pneumonia, and I thought "That's it", as that's such a common way to go even in normal times.
Found out why she had survived to 99. She said "bugger that" and got better. Made it to just shy of 101.
But yes, respiratory stuff in old people often means the end is in sight, especially with someone of the current Pope's, erm, 'constitution'.

Looks like Israel has been emboldened to try to clear Palestinians from the West Bank now. I do find it extraordinary that as an historically displaced people they are now doing the same to another people with apparently no shame.

Mixed bag from Germany, but the far right got less than 20%(if the exit polls are accurate), and there was a big youth turn-out to bolster the left (while ignoring Scholz's centre left). 84% turnout. Let's hope that Merz can form a government quickly, and won't suffer from the dithering over Ukraine that Scholz displayed.

Weren't the youth voting AfD?
0 -
Apparently not as much as hoped/feared. Apparently that mirage was partly down to Musk misrepresenting a mock youth voting project. Looks fairly split amongst the youth, and the Musk/Vance effect was seemingly minimal.

Give Trump the win, just don't tell him the details. Maybe good news for Ukraine.

Seems like they have a post-poll debate in Germany, and Merz is being more forthright. As well as pushing back against Musk's meddling he sounds like he's not going to sit on the fence re Ukraine.

That's good news if Macron and starmer can keep their balls together

Aha, here's the graphic I was looking for for the youth vote. Also notable (but not entirely unexpected) was over 55% for AfD on the East German border.
It looks likely that the far left party won't reach the 5% threshold to gain seats, so it'll be a two-party coalition. If they do go past the threshold, it'll be 3-party with the Greens.
0 -
Oof, the other party failed by 0.03% to get to 5% to be allowed any MPs, so it's probably a two-party coalition. If needs be, the Greens would be the third party.

I find it slightly odd that the main parties are being accused of being anti-democratic by trying to fulfil their manifesto pledges to lock out the AfD.

The recurrent theme that Brexit, Trump, rise of the far right in Germany (Yes, I appreciate Germany is not the only country affected by this), seems to have shown is that there is a very ugly streak hardwired into a lot of nations cultural and political psyches. Many in the UK wanted to revert to the days of empire, the US MAGA nuts want a return to pre civil rights, and a rather worrying % of Germans appear to be longing to resurrect Nazism.
0 -
If they think it's anti-democratic for a party who got 20% of the vote to have no part in government, the UK or USA systems would blow their minds.

Merz says he is going to be tough on one wanted war criminal whilst at the same time he has invited another one to visit.

How many people who voted for the main stream parties did so because of that particular pledge? And how many people voted for the main stream parties?

After the Prime Minister's announcement there was a press conference where he was asked if he can influence Trump particularly given they voted with Russia at the UN. His response was underwhelming to say the least.
I predict that he will not be following Macron's lead and may well come back waving a piece of paper.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

Very much interested in @First.Aspect 's view on this.
The proposed exemption to copyright law for AI training.
They've managed to unite all the newspapers.
On the other hand, various people are arguing that AI businesses should not have to ask permission for use of data, nor pay for use of that data otherwise the UK will be at a competitive disadvantage in the development of AI.
Personally if a business needs to have an exemption from the law that everyone operates under to be commercially viable, then they don't have a working business model. I don't see why anyone should give away their work for free.
Also undermines the principle of intellectual property.

Meta torrented 80 TB of books and then claimed it was ok because they restricted seeding.

Not that familiar with copyright, at least compared to what I do normally.
The issue here seems to be whether the access to and use of the training data by AI software infringes copyright - which under the current law it does I believe. The next question is whether or not it should. Copyright law (and IP law in general, if not law in general) lags behind technology. So in some ways it is positive that this is on governments radar.
From the snippets I hear, some artists are in crisis about whether the owners of existing copyright can get paid for use of it to generate an AI generated work. You'd need an IT professional to comment on the workability of the proposed opt out. Seems to me that it would be next to impossible to trace.
The other big issue I can't see being discussed is if you let AI train on the copyrighted data, and AI isn't a person, does that mean that a "new" work that would infringe if a person made it would not infringe because it is made using AI?
