Level up in full swing.
The plan is working. For some.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

This is a good thing. Stopping HS2 just outside London would have been insane.
Someone pointed out the other day that the Channel Tunnel was originally planned in the late 50s, was formally cancelled by the government in the 70s but still got built eventually. Suspect the same will happen with HS2 and eventually everyone will wonder why it wasn't done sooner.

Stopping it in Birmingham and ending up reducing the capacity between Manchester and London is insane.

Eventually? I was wondering that a few months ago.
Cost is the answer, but it will just be even more expensive next time round.

Luckily no one had sold off and built on the English Channel in the meantime.

Biden restricting some weapon supplies to Israel feels like quite a big move.

There was the small matter of a new railway to connect the tunnel to London.

I don't think they've been specific but basically it sounds like the stuff they are currently dumping on Gaza in vast quantities. I think I heard Biden state they would still be providing defensive systems.
"On Wednesday, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed the delay of the bomb shipment - some of the most destructive munitions in Western military arsenals - while testifying in front of the Senate.
The weapons being held back by the US are related to a future delivery, so the move is unlikely to have an immediate impact. But given the rate at which Israel is bombing it will probably affect future strikes fairly soon."

Luckily it only had to go through Kent so wasn't damaging any nice countryside for people to get upset about.

World bank forecasting Poland to have a higher GDP per Capita than the UK by *next year*
What a story.
0 -
Worth remembering that Poland has benefitted hugely from EU membership via structural funds (as opposed to just via single market membership). Off the top of my head, it is been a "net beneficiary" to the tune of circa 3% of GDP p.a. since it joined the EU. If someone had given the UK 3% of its GDP each year for 20 years then the UK would be in a very different state, one might surmise.
And equally, Poland will be advancing rapidly in economic measures on the other large, mature EU economies too.

It's a great story.
Never met a Pole I haven't liked either. If I didn't settle with children I'd have probably ended up in the states or in Poland.

Levelling up.

Have they benefited from not having the Euro?

If we'd been given an extra 3% of GDP with the current Government we'd probably be in the same position but their mates would have made even more money from dodgy procurement schemes.

If you think our lot are bad, the previous lot in Poland really took the PiS.

can only think of one i really disliked
i've a team there, it used to be low salary vs. uk, but the last person i hired there is getting more than someone in the uk with exactly the same qualification and experience
uk has higher taxation and cost of living, the shift in standard of living is dramatic

Do you think there will be a large scale exodus of settled EU citizens now our living standards can't compete?
We're so conditioned into thinking that everyone always wants to come here but I've always felt that was transient, and people who were mobile enough to come here will be mobile enough to leave if things are better elsewhere. Paradoxically, Brexit may help here, because once you're gone and lose settled status much harder to come back.

If I had my time again I'd have emigrated, because there are richer, cleaner and more optimistic places to live, and I am British. So yes.

Long term making the country unappealing to live in does "fix" the immigration problem.

yes, the uk population has traditionally been not very mobile, and projects that onto other countries, but attitude to mobility varies lot by country, generation etc.
i think the initial 'waves' of exodus already happened, initial brexit, covid - i certainly see far fewer eu personnel when i'm at hotels, used to be lots from poland, seems the same for tradespeople - then in the last couple of years they see reduced/reversed uk net earning differential vs. home country, high taxation, already high cost of living made even worse by inflation, etc.
a fair number seemed to be in uk to gain experience, save to buy a house 'back home' or send money home, some put down uk roots, but i don't think permanent relocation was the intent for most
but it's not only eu citizens leaving, i've several friends who've left uk, to eu, uae, americas, australia, mostly high net worth, a lot of tax revenue goes with them, one shifted his company hq with him, other friends are scouting eu, much as i enjoy london, i'm giving it serious thought as i plan to ease down to eat pineapples and avocados full time

Already seeing it a little in my world. Quite a few Frenchies returning to Paris. about 2-3% in my market according to my data, which is not insignificant.

Indeed. But even if it's as a result of a good policy (which I think is largely the case) it's a huge amount of cash that has been sent to Poland which renders a UK vs Poland comparison somewhat meaningless.

Lol if UK had stayed long enough in the EU it might have received some of that levelling up money, the way things are going ;-) ha.
FWIW, it is a good example to conservatives about the value of the kind of transfers Labour were doing under Brown to the North.

Ever heard of Mrs T's Enterprise Zones RC?

Even for the modern-day Telegraph, this does seem quite something as a headline.
