2024 Election thread

Unfortunately for Labour they now have the impossible task of demonstrating that they can run the show. It's all downhill from here, lefties 🙂

At least we managed to keep Labour out for few extra years. And the Labour party thread is going to be pretty active from now on 😀

That's a comforting way to look at it, but it's more fluid the other way.

There are NO Tories left in Cornwall.
There are middle class elderly ladies with sensible haircuts out on the streets looking bewildered, while their husbands part the range rover. It is very distressing for them.

Let's just take stock for a minute. Basically almost the entire cabinet, including the Chancellor and someone who was literally PM since the last election have lost their seats.
It's an utter utter bloodbath.

This is actually true. It is a landslide built on sand - he's got to get a LOT right from here. That said, the batshit crazy behaviour of the last 5 years has left a mark and this feels like a 2 term government.

Probably true but equally for a while in many areas they've been seen as a wasted vote - this election might lead them to be seen as a realistic alternative to the big two and get people looking at their policies in future

Why can right-wingers never count? Once you've won those 4 seats back there's still another 200 seats to go to form a government.

We'll see. I think if they screw up or fail to deliver as i expect, things could turn bad for them quickly. After all, a lot of Labòur votes were simply a 'not the Tories' vote rather than a ringing endorsement of their leftie vision for the country.

That's an incorrect calculation - Reform are a protest party for the hard of thinking, and they've taken votes from both of the major party. The Tories have behaved so poorly and with such corruption, that the electorate has lost faith in ALL politicians. Hence, Reform (a policy vacuum) and a poor turn out.
It makes me quite sad, actually.

Let me put this in context for you - the Tories STILL talk about how hard it was after the GFC when they took over. The Tories have left a much, much worse legacy. Some not of their own making, but my god have they made the worst of it. If you wanted to give your opponents ammunition for a decade, they couldn't have done more.
Whatever incarnation we see next, it won't be this Tory party.
The faces we have seen for a decade from them just annoy people and are irrecoverably associated with incompetence. They have to go away and find new people. This will take some time. If they plump for a Baverman or a Badenoch, they will look too much like continuity candidates. (The SNP have made this mistake twice already).

I'm not sure how much they took votes from Labour. Certainly in Sevenoaks, the Labour vote was unchanged (up 0.1%), the Conservative vote was down 25%: Lib Dems were up 6% and Reform up 19% (from zero, obviously)

It's mainly the mentals left for the Tories right?
Alas, my former classmate kept their seat. BOOOOOOO.

Who did you vote for in the end Rick?

Labour. Local Lib Dem candidate was a stone cold NIMBY.
Labour candidate is not especially good. Whatever is the salient topic in politics he'll be talking about something else. It's quite the skill.

Well we've just had a pretty graphic demonstration of what failing to deliver leads to, so yes. Similarly, a lot of the last government's votes were simply 'not Corbyn'. And before that, on a smaller scale the LibDems found out what failure to deliver means. That's a good thing: governments should be kept on their toes.

Had a feeling you might do that. At least you now have the government that you deserve 😊

Where is the best place to find individual seat results?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election/2024/uk/results not sure if it's best but if you know the geography.

Fair play for still attempting to come off across as smug Stevo 🤣

Anyway, we managed to keep the lefties out for a few more years, so seems fitting that the 'Labour Party' thread will become very active again 😀

I suspect they've lost a lot of votes over Gaza and their treatment of Corbyn - those votes could easily return as those issues become old news.
So yes they've not captured a huge share of the vote but interestingly the vote they have captured doesn't include quite a lot of left leaning voters.

Actually I'm wondering what you'll be making smartarse comments about now the Tories have gone? 😉

I've not done an exhaustive survey, but the Graun map is pretty clear. The BBC one is very similar but you have to click through a couple of extra steps to find the votes cast.
