People are often happy to lend you their dog while they go on holiday etc. to save on kennels etc.

Back in the zone. Feeling chilled and relaxed tonight, it's the positive mental effects of riding one's bike and enjoying life. For multiple reasons Sept and Oct were v bike-ride-light after a couple of active summer months post The Relocation.
Loss of fitness of course meant heavy breathing and backing off on the upslopes. Really enjoyed the ride though. Must Keep On It through winter; getting linked up with local CyclingUK / CTC peeps will help.
I ❤️ riding my bike. Beer time...1 -
50 minutes sitting stationary on the M5. How do you crash on a 3 lane motorway when it's dry and sunny, unless you're drunk or fannying about on a phone?
Now watching my new telly. I splashed out on a well reviewed oled one. Very impressive. I have a soundbar and a sub. I also bought some rear speakers effectively for free because I had a 30% discount on Sonos recycling deal. Not yet told Mrs B³ that I intend to wall mount them. I expect resistance.0 -
Yep - rescued a Red Admiral that was trapped in the conservatory.orraloon said:Cats! Dogs! It's not even raining.
Ride rided, at last a proper ride, been ages since last one, wot wiv.... things. Graveller and 38s so more effort / less pace, but G-One Allrounds pretty spot on for the amount of mush, leaves, general gloop across the back roads.
Weather getting weirder, mid Nov, 17 degrees, hazy sunshine plus flying insects...seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

I can't subscribe to things like Netflix or any similar content channels for UHD stuff, simply because my broadband is hopelessly inadequate for the task. On a good day, I am still stuck with about 20 Mbps at best.
My only option to fix that is to switch to Starlink as the ISP, which would give me somewhere around 10x the download speed I have now. My problem is I'm no fan of the owner anyway, and it means sending money offshore to a foreign entity who are unlikely to make any meaningful tax contribution in Oz for the revenue they generate here.

tbh 20 meg could be enough, but things like latency and how your isp does things may be more of an issue, for domestic service it's almost certain there'll be other people 'sharing' the same connection at the telco end, i.e. at busy times you'll get reduced speedWheelspinner said:

try checking your connection using https://fast.com/# and click the 'show more info' button, it should show you the latency, lower is better, > 100 milliseconds is likely to be trouble
if the isp router has crappy wifi, using an ethernet cable for the tv rather than wireless might help

The service I am on here is essentially a 4G network, used for "remote" area provisioning of broadband. It's separate from the mobile network altogether, run by a different company. One problem with it is they spread the capacity thin, so in order to be able to "guarantee" reliable service they limit the speed of everyone attached to it. They did try a little more flexible speed for a while and I would get upwards of 40 at different times of the day, but they had so many complaints from users about the reliability of the connection they went back to the throttled service. Or something.
I use a Google mesh wifi setup here as the house is a lot of solid brick internal walls (and just plain huge) so the signal doesn't penetrate that well. The TV box is currently hard wired to one of those mesh units which works ok, mostly.

hmm, mesh networks can be bad for latency - typically each node in the mesh has to receive the entire packet before sending it on to the next one, the delays stack upWheelspinner said:

Ah ok. There are three nodes in my setup, and the TV is wired to the furthest one from the router. It’s a weird pile of tech that comes with this service - there’s a roof antenna, connected to a modem inside. That feeds the wifi router. I’m using the Google thing for that as the original one supplied by the telco was fairly crap wifi strength, and simple extender/repeaters just made it worse, which is why I used mesh insteadsungod said:

That modem box is actually a router though I think so I could in theory run a second cable from it to the other end of the house. Just need probably 50 metres of it, and a stack of conduit, plus loads of masonry drill bits and a hammer drill.. lol.
I’ll check the latency figure at the far end and see how it compares.

You could get yourself a 50m cable and run it loose temporarily to see if it solves the problem, before getting the drill out.Wheelspinner said:
