New crank, all else remaining exactly the same?

    take off pedals
    unship chain
    2x NDS bolts
    Remove crank
    slide off DS crank
    Greaseup (moly) new ds crank
Slip it in sll the way
    Slip on NDS
If centre bolt type, do up centre bolt (Shimano)
    2x NDS bolts
    Put chain on
    Grease pedal threads, put on
Go out and pull skids and monos

    Simples, innit

Unship chain ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Like the sound of that ๐Ÿ‘

Do I need a shimano pre load tool to get the pre load cap off on the NDS crank?
It's not really necessary - helps, and likely makes the job easier to avoid any damage to the plastic, but that cap should be barely more than finger tight anyway. If you have some multi grips or large vice grips, just wrap a rubber band round the cap outer edge for protection and gently use those pliers/tools.
๐Ÿ‘ Iโ€™ll find something I can wedge in there and turn. Thanks.

yup, and you schedule that in for the next day to keep you out of domestic chores again.

anyway, procrastination always gives you something to do tomorrow. i've spent 4 hours today thinking about walking downstairs to mow the lawn....

Surprisingly nippy this morning. No likey.

Just ordered some shorter cranks. Straight forward jobby to change? Or anything I can potentially censored up?

Easier to just order a new bike with the right length cranks on.

But, depending on what the cranks are, can be anywhere from fairly simple to almost certain death.

You b.ugger! I need the shorter cranks so I can reach the pedals.

If you could nip over and do it for me, I could stretch to buying you half a pint in return ๐Ÿ‘
why not just lower the saddle?

Went for a spin in this down to the South Coast. Not very fast but quite a few people looking and pointing.

My mate was just glad it didn't break down. Although the top of the gear stick did come off in his hand :)

Actually the other evening I'm sitting out front chillin' and having a coldie when I see this middle aged looking woman in a hi viz top pushing her bike up the slope the other side of my wall, just a farmer's field, leads onto another field, and another...

Brief conversation along lines of 'aye that's a steep slope' etc. She says she has power, has an e-bike. But where was she going and why? Baby MTB practicing? Lost? GPS malfunction? Going for a Strava QOM? Who knows?

He had a bit of fun getting it into 1st gear. But it started OK.

  • Looks nice, a 3.8 litre Series 1 or 4.2 litre Series 1.5?

Mate had one back in the 80s, lovely thing, and surprisingly reliable till he blew the clutch to bits going somewhere in a hurry.

    3.8l Series 1. Registered Feb '64.

Looks good and runs OK but still needs a bit of work on a few niggles and the interior needs redoing.

These bad boys do these old jags in town near me. I've seen there work and it's very good. No short cuts, it's either right or they don't do it.

He's been working on it for 6 months with a good mechanic that we both know from when we did track days. Not a Jag specialist but good. Apparently you don't get much change from 100 grand for a full professional refurb by a Jag specialist.

  • Series 1 is the pick of them for value, and looks. And yeah, any of them can be a money pit. ๐Ÿ˜€ Iโ€™d rather have a driver version rather than the full restoration show car type though. Get them reliable and use them properly.

    This ^.

My 944 will never be concourse. I don't want it like that - petrified of a bit of rain or dirt on it (my mate's mini is a great example). I want to drive mine in the middle of winter just for the heck of it and sod the salt, mud and rain - i'll hose it off, some of it might even cause a bit of rust.

Saw a 944 2.7 SE* in white. Pristine. Eat your dinner off the floor pan pristine. Every sq inch of suspension new or powder coated. Re-upholstered interior by Southbound https://www.southboundtrimmers.com/#, receipts for ยฃ42k (on sale for ยฃ27,995 !!). A jaw dropping car but will end up as a collectors item and taken out once in a blue moon.
I hope the Jag ^ gets driven lots.

    *Only 150 built.
