SRAM seem to be sticking with mechanical for the time being. And Campag as well. They will see a lift I should think, particularly SRAM because of the wheel compatability.

Campagnolo are, but, and it is a big but, you need 12 speed for Chorus and above.
Have you checked out the prices of 12 speed chains, cassettes and chainrings?
    I dare not.

Perhaps there will be an aftermarket for the mechanical stuff. It will all be dropping out of patent, even the SRAM stuff.

A huge market I dare say.
Unless most persist on this stupid idea of "upgrading" every couple of years.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Well, tbh the likes of MicroShift and the Chinese fellas will jump on designs when it all comes out a patent but from what I've read MicroShift isn't too far off the mark at the mo' under their own steam.

Rotor as well with their caliper/hydro systems.

I know, right? There are some guys I ride with who must have some interesting household budget discussions. Own brand dishwasher tablets for 10 years, vs. this year's Specialised colourway. I earn 3-5 times what some of them do and I don't think it's worth upgrading because it's too expensive.

Buy once, buy well, ride it, replace the consumables.

Just so everyone is clear on my position regarding this, 14 years old this year.
That, and I still enjoy just looking at it while it is stripped down for it's winter overhaul. 😎

I love the colour on that one. And the chrome. If only I'd kept that Marinoni I had....

I have a 2005 Cannondale, a 2010 Lynskey (disc, sorry, but mechanical at least) and a 2015 Eriksen with Di2 but rim brakes. Oh and a 2018 Cervelo disc that rides a bit like a Roman chariot without any suspension whatsoever.

I don't especially enjoy the disc brakes bikes, but they do the job. just love riding the other two, and replacement bits will exist for as long as I do.

Do you think I should get an aero road bike and some aero kit. And if I do will it be less aero next year?
  • I have a second hand C59 with Ultegra (sorry MF) Di2 that I can't really see myself ever upgrading the frame.

With two young children and diminshing fitness I keep thinking I should sell it, but I haven't looked after it well enough for it to be worth getting rid of.

1a. Do you race? Use the same answer.
1b Do you average over 25mph? Use the same answer.
    2. Don't be silly. 😉

They are made to be ridden. Ernesto would be proud. 😉

You could always get a respray but as above they are meant to be ridden.

  • I'll keep it until it breaks. So long as I can keep my own weight down, tyre clearances on 17mm internal width and 25mm tyres just about work and are comfy enough.

Maybe a new paint job in a few years time when I can increase my mileage. I managed a total of 1500km last year!

And there's another not new new thing, wide tyres.

I had a cross bike come with 28's and wide 29er rims over a decade ago. These days that's comfortable and aero.

Felt like riding a balloon so I switched back to 25's and stuck with that ever since. Only, I don't pressurise them to the brink of exploding.

    I remember having 19mm tyres. 25mm are luxury. 😉

I tried 17s once, on a mate's bike. It felt like he'd just wrapped electrical tape round the rims.

EDIT - they might have been 18s. Long time ago, back when my bike was better than your bike.

Did you guys not learn how to stand a bike up using the pedal and kerb/stone as a kid?

Yes, and I can see the angle the cranks are at and the driveside pedal is on a rock, but that would stop me from making a smartarse comment so I ignored it 😛
More importantly, you commented on the OCD bike pictures thread about NapD resurfacing then you post a picture taken from the NDS. Have you no respect 🙄

Summer lockdown freedom holiday in Perthshire. This is near the top of the climb out of Glen Quaich. 17.3% according to Strava. What gear ratio would you suggest? 😉

Didn't someone die coming down that a couple of years ago?

It is one of the hardest climbs in Britain.
