Being visible at night

Unless you’re riding solely on very brightly lit streets, one dim light and no high-vis doesn’t cut it. More than half the cyclists I see at night aren’t nearly visible enough. Yes we all look cooler and slimmer in black but it’s not worth the risk.

Double up the lights, replace/charge the batteries, stick on some high-vis. Stay safe out there.

I like to think you're preaching to the converted on here. Some say it's victim blaming but ultimately we each have to take responsibility for our own safety.
I'd add to that a flashing light if on busy roads as a static light is easily lost amongst all the headlights. Reflective stuff is very good, most hi-vis has reflective elements. When riding through the darkness of the park I pick up reflectives from hundreds of yards away but even light coloured clothing takes a lot longer to notice. I find a light on my head is very good in the park so I can look around and see things, being able to smell deer but not see them is really quite disconcerting.
To show how stupid people are, there was the time I stopped to help a bloke that was wheeling his bike in the park and looked to be in pain. He thought he had broken his collar bone. Said he'd hit another cyclist that had no lights head on. I was just starting to say how stupid the other guy was when he admitted to having no lights himself. So a pair of cycling ninjas rode into each other head on in an unlit park in the dark. I didn't know what to say so confirmed someone was coming to meet him and left. A short while later I saw the other bloke at the side of the path looking at his bike. Hopefully they learnt something at least.

    ^^ good advice.
Just to add, 3M Scotchlite tape (or similar) stuck to frame and helmet (the law in France) can increase safety. They even do black tape that reflects white- clever stuff.
  • Bright and reflective material on the moving legs and feet is great for visibility, in addition to the working bike lights.

we're plagued by twatswho pedal around unlit lanes at night with no lights - everything from clubbies dressed all in black 2 or 3 abreast who all think they are Pidcock, although he's not very good or cool to person cycling home from work/pub/plug.

    arzeholez, the lot of them.

Surely clubbies would be in their club kit, which won't be black.

The Proviz kit is amazing in the dark.

they'll cover up their God awful overpriced appallingly designed badly fitting club kit with black because they think it makes them look pro, not just like a clubbie on ashit bike with mudguards, only exposing clubbie kit for parading during the day.

    clubbies, eh.

Do you not know that club kit is often cheaper than the same items retail price, coz the clubs don't try to make a profit on it?
You really don't have a clue about clubs, and just come across as a complete a'hole. It really does you no favours.

But remember, the Falle knows the clubbie ‘cos he is one: not so long ago he said this:
“ i'm actually nominally in two and train "the hitters" in a third.”

I hope its cheaper as its so hideously designed.

imagine paying decent money for anything as hideous as the average club kit. you just, just wouldn't. if you did you'd be a mug.

and i hope they don't try amd make a retail profit margin on anything because they aren't a shop they are a club, so don't come across as a crow hat.

As an aside, your clubbie mates at London Dynamo insist (part of club rules) that club kit be worn at all time, much like many - if not all - other clubs.

So that's £59 for a top and £69 for a gilet that both look like they have designed by a 6 year old.

Veritable bargains said no person ever.

Just a quick Google, london Dynamo kit is all made by Sportful- I thought you'd like that, being Italian and all.
A quick look at Sportful gilets -Ouch £160 at Chain reaction.
I don't think you've thought through this `clubbie` hatred enough. Get rid of amateur clubs and all professional sport ceases to exist.

Anyway, this thread started as a safety warning (be seen) and you cast your dark shadow over it, and it ends up a rant about club cyclists AGAIN.

nah. thought through and i'm right.

any organisation that demands you spend over £100 on their awful clothing before you can ride your bicycle with them is, frankly, right up its ownarse and can shove it..

Captain Falle and his ego are out in the open again.
He’s right. Even when he’s not right. From all evidence he really thinks about things before venting his rightful opinion.
Falle knows a clubbie because they wear matching, hideously designed cycling gear. They also wear black cycling gear, possibly at the same time, because clubbies are one of the categories of cyclists that ride around, to the annoyance of the Falle, in the dark barely visible to him. These things are perfectly possible in the Falle world.

Regarding the original post I've been collecting old working lights off mates and giving them to various numpties I see on my commute into work. 1 bloke I see regularly on quite a busy road did have a rear light on the front, now has a proper front light. I've also been handing spoke straws out as I was given a box full. Amazing how they catch the lights. I believe companies that employ low paid non UK workers could help by educating those that cycle.
Perhaps others on here could do similar. PS I understand those in the big cities might be on a hiding to nothing.

Two of these nearly came a cropper last week, dark clothing, no lights on an dimly lit street. Fortunately the plastic bag of beers on the handlebars caught my eye before it was too late.

Moving back on topic (one does realise the MF army are on perpetual wind up mode?) I really don't get the dark black grey kit thing. I ride fluoro yellow or as minimum bright blue with reflectors in short sleeve summer, which ain't often. Plus flashing front and rear lights daytime on the roadie.

Example. Couple nights ago driving in the truck back from work along this narrow really heavy commuter traffic road, a route I never ride bar Sunday mornings when it's rel quiet and I want a quick transit, getting dark. See (v late) a couple of teens riding MTBs, black gear, no lights. It's suicide situation. Be very lucky people. Not read any reports so assume they survived.

Don't understand why people don't maximise the visibility.

Well b@gger me. Just watching a Midsummer murder and as Barnby and Jones are walking out of the pub. Five clubies come hurtling past in matching kit nearly taking them out. Whatever next.
I blame you MF for encouraging this behaviour.

You don't read his behaviour the same as me. Anyway, even if it's a perpetual wind up -what a waste of time.
Just in this thread alone, 20 posts out of the 27 are about MF. If it's not clubbies, then it's Ultegra, slammed stems or Hunt wheels. How utterly boring.

£160 is for their top offering, the Giara. Plenty of Sportful gilets for £40-50 in retail, and I am more than convinced you would be getting one of those at LD.
You won't be riding in one and the same jersey all club rides, so you need at least 3-4 of them. Add the membership fee - £70 and you are a minimum of £300 out of pocket. Cycling is ridiculously overpriced for most.

  • I have a profound dislike of hi viz, particularly hi viz yellow, which makes me feel slightly nauseous when I have to look at it. Anyway, I don't see how it can make you any more visible than a non hi viz bright colour, particularly not at night. It doesn't, after all, glow in the dark.

All in favour of lights, of course, and use flashing ones in the day in winter. If riding in the dark I have at least two lights front and rear, and sometimes three, if out for any length of time. As for reflectives, I recently bought a Proviz jacket for work, which this time of year is in darkness for the last hour or so. It does seem to be getting people's attention…

I agree, cycling can be expensive but, people should be allowed to spend their money on whatever, including joining clubs- without being judged.
