New shoes for the "Old Shoe"

Thanks,N0bodyOfTheGoat said:Noticed the final mile of Penbarra climb on Rouvy (free 30 day code from Strava challenge at mo) is very similar to Old Shoe elevation gain, could be decent alternative for pacing if you have a turbo that can do ~15% gradient simulation.

didn't get the chance to go there last weekend and will only test the climb the day before the National. I kind of know what to expect... it's going to be north of 8 minutes and hopefully south of 9... I've raced an 8 minute climb twice in September... around 330W on both occasions... which did seem a lot... but I am determined to ride to power on this occasion, too long and steep to chance it. I'll aim for 320 on the first half and then see how it feels. If I had a slower minute man (or even better both the 30s and the minute man) that would help a lot... nothing like catching a prey. Difficult though, as I think I am over-ranked by Spindata at the moment... that's what happens when you try to be clever and race in the early season when everybody is out of form.

Illi Gardner has ridden it this morning. Segment QOM is now 6:58.ugo.santalucia said:
In the women race Illi Gardner should win, with Bithja second and probably Rebecca Richardson 3rd
Mary Wilkinson would beat Rebecca on a climb like this and Joanna Blackburn could do a very similar performance.
I was hoping that local rider Frances Owen would do well but she's had Covid.Aspire not to have more, but to be more.0 -
Agree, I didn't think WIlkinson would sign up, since she hasn't basically raced at all...simon_e said:

In other news, they have dumped me early in the morning... I was hoping to have a better start time, given there is no shortage of folks with no racing history and others who are ranked D and E on Spindata, who should have really put first... otherwise what exactly is the point of racing and getting a ranking?left the forum March 20230 -
Out of interest Ugo, what sort of warm ups to people do for these events?
I imagine it must be a difficult balance between going hard enough to get yourself fully up to speed and not taking too much out of yourself.0 -
Wind looks favourable, hopefully you avoid the late morning shower and if you don't, the lane doesn't get too slippy.

Most of the time you are up too early to do a proper warm up… afternoon races are best in this respect. If the road is open, I tend to have a go at the hill at 85-90% after a brief warm up… that gives me an idea of the gears and where I need to make an effort to avoid a power drop. For very steep climbs, typically you have no choice, it’s almost like going ERG mode to be honest. I fear Sunday will be one of those. I won’t have the opportunity to do a proper warm up, because I am on early and the road is closed, so I’ll do what I can to keep warm and then I will ride to power… I have a Garmin screen with only power and distance… I will aim for 320ish and see how I feel two thirds of the way up.mrb123 said:Out of interest Ugo, what sort of warm ups to people do for these events?

Looks alright, only complain is that tomorrow it’s set to rain all day, so I might not have the chance to try the climb… but it’s not crucial, it’s to steep to have a strategy anyway, it’s about riding within my limits and see what I get out of itN0bodyOfTheGoat said:Wind looks favourable, hopefully you avoid the late morning shower and if you don't, the lane doesn't get too slippy.

Did a recce today finally… managed 9:15 staying under 300w, so I am confident for tomorrow… just a matter of not overthinking it… the pacing was spot on todayleft the forum March 20231

Well, my predictions weren’t bad… 🙂ugo.santalucia said:
you mean 5:30? I think so, it depends on wind direction... long term forecast seems to suggest a nice southerly.N0bodyOfTheGoat said:Just seen Tom Bell did more practice runs today, including 5mins47secs!
Will we see sub 5.5 minutes on 30th?
I don't even think Tom Bell will win this year... so far he hasn't shown the same form as last year.
My prediction
Feather 5:20
Bell 5:35
Laverack 5:50
Biddle 6:00
Bussell 6:05

Official results for the men race here... upgraded to 195th... interestingly, I have edged Sam Leng by 0.08 seconds... last year he was 0.9s faster than me... the year before I was 6 seconds faster... definitively a close contest... I don't think I've ever met him

Good work Ugo. I notice you were only a few seconds off a lad who cycles round my way and he is a pretty handy 2/3rd cat racer I think.
Interesting to see just how far ahead Feather and Bell are of the other top guys, 15 odd seconds to 3rd place is absolutely massive.0 -

I was also not far off Matt Clinton, although that says more about his form than mine...
Yes, Feather & Bell are in another league at the moment... Bell was at 7.5W/kg, which is world class over that time frame... Feather 8 W/kg, although I suspect his power meter is not reading right... it's just impossible, probably also 7.5-7.6 W/kg

Video I saw of Feather made everyone else look like they were standing still. Absolute animal.0

When I ran the 100-meter dash, the difference of less than one second was significant. But in cycling, I don't even pay attention to such a difference...ugo.santalucia said:Official results for the men race here... upgraded to 195th... interestingly, I have edged Sam Leng by 0.08 seconds... last year he was 0.9s faster than me... the year before I was 6 seconds faster... definitively a close contest...
