It's a good fast course - what time estimate did you put in?
If you can get an early start time, all the better.

I’ve got a 6.05 start time and I’ve haven’t got a clue about how long it will take. 7hrs? 🤷🏻‍♂️

That sounds like you will potentially be in the very first wave, or not long after.

What kind of average speeds do you tend to travel at riding solo on a 100km ride for example?

Whatever you do on a regular rolling course you'll be 2mph minimum faster on that flat and open course with closed roads and tons of drafting.

In the early waves, people were doing it in well under 4 hours.

I was reasonably fit last summer, and managed it in 5 hours, but could have paced it better and gone quicker.

On a solo ride of circa 100k on my best bike I'd likely average somewhere around 18mph, maybe a bit more on a good day.

It's a course that lends itself to power, which I do not have much of, but that is when the drafting benefit really kicks in.

Frustrating that they have gone backwards in my opinion, by requiring numbers to be collected the day before, where as last year they sent them out in the post.

I’m in Wave A and the last time time I did a 100km ride was in 2019 which was the Cambridge 100.
I can’t remember the time but I was very happy with it.

My numbers were posted to me last Friday.

    That's interesting.
Last year they were adamant it was a one off.
    Much better.

TBH I’m shitting bricks about the entire event. Probably too much over worrying but shitting bricks nonetheless.

I’m been doing 25 miles a day 6 days a week since the new year for my commute into central London.

I also do 4 pool sessions a week swimming 1km each time.

    I hope it’s enough.

That sounds like pretty good training to me.

Have you managed any longer rides at all?

I suspect you will, but I'd choose your most comfortable pair of shorts for the day.

At that time of day it's pretty chilly, I'd recommend at least armwarmers, and or a light packable wind jacket or gilet that you can stuff in a jersey pocket when you are close to the off.

It's a great atmosphere, try not to get too carried away like I did last year and partially detonated at around the 60 mile mark.

I pushed too hard as I was trying to keep up with the really fast ones.

Sadly I’ve only done a few 30-40km rides.

Thanks for the info re the clothing. I was actually going to come on here and ask about that. I’m think of buying one of those foil poncho things to wear and keep the heat in before the race.
I’ve got to be there for 5.10am and hang about until 6.05am for my start.

As Daniel b suggests a foldable wind or rain jacket would be better. Because it will be of some use if it gets cold or rains on the ride.
A bin liner will work nearly as well as a foil poncho.

I recently bought the blue https://www.merlincycles.com/funkier-dryride-pro-showerproof-cycling-jacket-193438.html for ~£24.

On a z1 ~30min test ride, wearing a pair of PlanetX 3/4 bibs and a PX baselayer, I was very comfortable in what Strava reckons was a breezy 16C. Very lightweight.

Other jackets are available, always an art finding jackets that suit a given temperature at a given effort.

If you're worried about getting round, and you have that early a start - my advice would be hang back for a later wave. In the early waves, its predominantly fast guys, and you'll either destroy yourself hanging on for longer than you should, or demotivate yourself when you're constantly getting passed. Hang back half an hour to an hour, and you'll avoid both. You're allowed to drop back waves - you're not allowed to move forward.

In terms of keeping warm, I know last year they were collecting disposed jumpers/tops at the start for homeless/charity. My ride friends bought a £3 fleece from a charity shop ahead of time and handed it in just before the official start line. I went with the arm warmer/gilet combo.
