Yeah... Most people would never enter any races. I guess that's the logic all the sandbaggers on Zwift use though - if I enter the As where I should be I can't win so I'll enter the Cs instead.Ben6899 said:I'm not saying my attitude is correct, btw. In fact, it's way off normal thinking!
I've never entered the club TT. No point - wouldn't win.
I've done hill climbs where mid-pack is my best possible result... You ride your own race don't you - can I beat these guys I know, can I beat my time from last year/last time. I am doing a 6 hour MTB in September. Needless to say, I won't win! But I might beat my brother
On a popular 10 TT course there will be some guys doing ridiculous times so you have to be really incredible to even think about winning (and spend a few grand on super aero kit too).

You don't enter anything unless you can be the best in the world?Ben6899 said:DeVlaeminck said:Rohan doesn't look happy but I guess he came here for gold. For Dumoulin I'm guessing a silver is above expectation - certainly above my expectation .
What's the point, if you're not there for Gold? Discussed this at length with Miss6899, last night. I can't understand how anyone is happy with anything but Gold, considering the commitment needed to perform at the Olympics. Miss6899 made the point "imagine 4years ago, in Gymnastics when we knew Biles was going to clear up, you'd be happy with Silver"... I wouldn't have bothered, if I knew Gold was 99% an impossibility, take the family on holiday instead.
But then I'm an incredibly sore loser.

The Hungarian US snowboarder would be the test for most people. Her goal was to get to the Olympics despite not really being able to ride a half-pipe.0

Well, from a very successful sportswoman...Disappointed but not dejected!
As the media go to great lengths to push their athletes, and also a lot of "Mister I know everything", I want to speak on my race yesterday.
I am proud to have arrived at these Games being 100% and that is my first personal satisfaction. I have never been so fit in my career as this week. I have never felt so happy to be at such an event, surrounded by a top staff and team. But yes, high performance sport is ungrateful, and the reward you want is not always what you want. Otherwise it would be too easy ...
Yesterday, after a decent start, I felt able to compete for the title. Unfortunately, I made a mistake at the start of the race, I slipped on the rocks and lost a lot of time. After that, I mobilize again to aim for a medal, and when it comes time to come back to 2nd, I die from behind. No apologies, I'm on the wrong course. I am still fighting to finish this race in 10th position. Not the place I wanted at the start, but it was the best I could do after these mistakes which cost me dearly! I think it is a respectable and honorable place. Anyway, that's how I feel it deep inside me. So I'm proud of myself, I keep smiling, I keep my dream of being an Olympic champion a little longer in the back of my mind, and I will fight to keep my titles of European champion and European champion. World. Because I don't want to relive the "after Rio" episode where the mere thought of cycling made me cry. I want to live happy, doing what makes me happy. What makes me happy today is finding the strength to smile after the worst race scenario I could imagine. Smile with my 21-year-old teammate, new mountain biking star, who took 6th place in her first Olympic Games. Smile for all the good times we have to live. Smile for this day that was offered to usWe're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

A little bit of support for Ben. I won't enter anything that I don't expect to be in the top 3 at county level at least. It's a long time since I competed and now consider myself retired.DeVlaeminck said:

Britain's Geraint Thomas, a two-time Olympic gold medallist and former Tour de France winner, came 12th in the men's individual time trial earlier today.
“It was tough," said the Welshman. "I tried to start at a pace that we thought would be there or thereabouts for a medal. Then I heard I was 50 seconds down on [eventual winner Primoz] Roglic which wasn’t great for morale.
“I had a bad patch on the climb of the second lap, and lost momentum and concentration a bit. Rohan [Dennis] caught me and that wasn’t good for the head either.
"It’s been a super hard five weeks and it just seems to be one thing after the next.
“I tried to stay positive and stay on it, tried to put the hat in the ring and not be scared of failing. It’s just been tough, especially mentally as well. I just need to stay positive and try to keep going."0 -
I suppose my crazy take on life has at least caused some conversation.
I just watched the rowing and the GB steering problems. How does that happen?Ben

Likeliest reason is one of the rowers totally collapses and so the strength on the other side of the boat pulls it around.Ben6899 said:I suppose my crazy take on life has at least caused some conversation.

Have seen it happen in a coxed 4 I steered - it can be quite dramatic if they really blow up. You shouldn't see that at Olympic final level though.1 -

Ah right, so in a coxless boat, it's kept straight by port and starboard rowing forces being (roughly) equal. And in a coxed boat, even with the additional steering input, an imbalance in rowing forces is still enough to take the boat off course?
Interesting.Ben

nah you just steer against it, which also slows you down... you just feel it when you're steering.Ben6899 said:rick_chasey said:
