Based in Guildford I think, it’s possibly the closest to you in the U.K.

I hope your route finding is better than your reading ;-)

This mixing of languages reminds me of the time we went to the Aquarium in Brest with the kids.

My wife goes to get the tickets and being polite tries to use her limited French but instead of replying with Oui says Ja - leading to the multilingual ticket seller assuming we are a German family and giving her the spiel about the aquarium in German while she tried to explain she's actually English and can't understand a word. Probably funnier at the time!

I had an ex who was half italian, half welsh and grew up in Portugal.

I learned a bit of Italian, but it was a nightmare following conversations between her, her siblings and her dad, as sentences would contain english, italian and portuguese words.

I did a project once, based in Singapore. The project team had people from 20+ countries and native languages. Two of the stream lead guys - a Frenchman and a German - used to chat with each other in Spanish, to me in English, and variously to the other people in the team in Dutch, Italian and Swedish.

Meetings were a frikkin nightmare to take minutes for!

There are lots of German holidaymakers in the area around Lake Garda, because I'm tall and not particularly dark people often assume I'm German there. When I reply in Italian with a local accent they get very apologetic. Mind you, my dad once forgot himself at a bar there and ordered a beer and a dry Martini, he was confused when they brought him 1 beer and 3 Martinis.

They also all spoke French and Spanish. One of the brothers also spoke German on top of that.
