Punctures

Just a quick question.

When I get a puncture I’ll change the tube and throw the old one away in the nearest bin. Does anybody here take it home and fix it?

Cheers.

Didn't the rule of thumb used to be to bin a tube once it has been patched 3 times?

Yep I always repair a tube if possible.

Why throw something away that can easily be fixed? it's a waste of money and not good for the planet.

I was taught to set fire to them and then throw it over the nearest hedge.

Yes, fix them. Unless you were careless and managed to rip the valve out when a strap caught in your spokes like I just did.

set fire to them and then refit seems the logical choice.

I have found burning the bike on the spot in a sort of Jimi Hendrix style sacrifice is best at appeasing the puncture gods.

I’ve found once I do that I never get a puncture on that bike again.

Once upon a time in another century we used to try throw them on to tree branches. But then we sort of realised this wasn’t that good for the planet.

I think I’ll start fixing them. Last time I did one was off my Redline BMX back in about ‘81.

I’ve not heard of that one but I’ll certainly give it a go next time I get a flat.

They still have sandpaper in them now but no wax crayon or French chalk. Is that because of brexit.

I prefer the ready-to-stick patches over the patches where you put the vulcanising gel on first.

Easier to work with in the compromised conditions of the roadside.

Well you find out that you can't get the patch to stick sooner, I suppose.

  • Self adhesive patches if out riding, glue on patches when fixing at home.
Can buy spare patches on Ebay as the kits don't come with many these days.

Any of the Tip Top rema kits or the generic ones from halfords/Wilkos. Bring the tube back home, repair and its ready to go. If it punctures again I bin it.

    This.
Replacement new tube on the roadside, repair in the comfort of your home.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

no need for all this fancy martin fandango stuff from the pages of Cyclist or the club - £2.99 or whatever from even the local garage.

if you choose the right garage you can even get some smokey bacon crisps and a copy of Razzle.
