Cleaning the chain - new bike

Got my new boardman CXR 8.9 and had it about a couple of months now and done about 100 miles.

A friend of mine told me that they (Halfords) have used a really gloopy lube and that this should be cleaned off and relubed.

He says to use petrol or white spirits and a paint brush and the apply 3 in 1 oil.

Is it ok to use this to clean the chain? Or should I get a specialist product like muk off?

Also should I use 3 on 1 oil or apply some muk off dry lube that I have?

Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times.

hes chattingshit and tell him so as he's clueless.

they (or any other shop) won't have put anything on as all chains come from new with factory lube on. he's chattingshit. is he in a club?

ride for a couple of hundred miles, see how it is, then if necessary clean with degreaser (Jizer, Gunk, etc, nothing he recommends) then lube with your favourite lube (nothing he recommends) and ride and enjoy and smile.

Man, get a grip. Cyclist in club = 4rse it seems according to your perpetual thinking. The views of some on here may differ, from personal experience, from your own with regards to clubs so maybe give it a rest.
Is it purely cycling clubs you believe consist of objectionable people or in fact every club going?

    Thanks. I’ll ignore his advise.

When applying the degreaser do you use a cloth or a brush?

I’ll put the Muk Off Dry lube on afterwards.

    ciao

i use Jizer with a nail bush, hold the jizer covered nail brush on the chain on the cassette, spin the cranks, clean the chain on the cassette, do the same to the chain on the crank rings, 30 seconds each end, clean chain, clean cassette, clean chain rings.

hose off, dry with compressor or run through a towel, apply lube.

5 mins all in, minimal cost because its jizer from motor factor in 5 litre cans for £25 not clubbie muc off or similar.

job jobbed - spotless, sparkling, smoooooth.

nah - you just an indictrinated dull clubbie.

all clubs have an element of clique - its in the name - you and your clubbie cycling mates manage to merge clique and total dickness in one hit.

Can I just say I take the chain off every so often, Gunk to clean as previously mentioned, reinstall and a bit of lube.

Whilst chain is off you can clean your jockey wheels with Gunk whilst you are at it.

If I am feeling particularly lazy I will just use aerosol brake cleaner.

While your at it take the wheel off and do similar on your cassette.

Similarly, having encountered many group club rides who think they "own the path" I do not hold them in high regard either.

Screwfix degreaser is stupidly cheap and stupidly good.

Fenwicks chain lube is stupidly cheap and stupidly good too.

And yet 'clubs' are responsible for delivering probably more than 90% of competitive cycling events in the UK. Presumably those denigrating clubs only ever ride around for a bit of fun and have never taken part in an event staged by a cycling 'club'..??

    Thought not.

Nothing wrong with using 3in1 it’s as good as any other lube. After every ride wipe your chain down (I use baby wipes) and dry it to get rid of the grime it picks up and every few hundred miles a good degrease then re lube. Little and often is the trick.

    "A bit of fun"

Trust me I can expend as much energy and exert as much effort as your average clubbie but without having to listen to the inane drivel they spout.

    no.

been a member of a club for years - you need to to race, especially at the level i was which is far above you.

it was prettyshit but compared to all the other clubs around here and clubbies I have encountered over the 35 years of decent level riding i have done, far better than them they were reallyshit.

clubs and clubbies. they ain't that great, fella.

what club are you in I? Andyrrrrr and Devon Boy are still failing to declare their allegiances.

So you are in a club, but you hate clubs.

Lots of people have raced at a far higher level than me - but as with the previous poster, that really isn't the point.

Your palmares sounds really impressive though. But at the moment it remains as mysterious and unknown as the details of the various clubs that myself and others are in.

Why should other people declare their club 'allegiances' when you aren't declaring yours? Set the example and let others follow...

Irrelevant. You can't have it both ways, even though you do try.

You're in a club - either name it or STFU about complaining that nobody else is naming theirs. I know you love these public wankathons, but they're not particularly edifying for everyone else.

you seem to think though that i'm in a club - that would involve me turning up, wearing theirshit kit and talking with them, none of which i do.

in fact its actually been years since i even signed their name against mine and probably a good 15 since I thought about paying subs. In fact, if I remember rightly, I don't think i even ever paid for the horrendous top they gave me.

So no, no clubbiness me for me. Soz geezer.

but for you? or too embarrassed? we all think the latter for you, Andy and DB.

Why would anyone want to open themselves up to ignorant, pathetic abuse from a troll?
Who do the Fails think organise all the races around the country, be they TTs, circuit races or road races?
You may be an anti-social person but plenty of others really appreciate the organisation of group rides and other events.
You act like a tool around other people, well strangely enough they might not want to engage back.
No sure any club would want you.

So you were in a club. But you never paid subs. That's a bit like Bill Clinton saying he smoked dope, but didn't inhale. Congrats on ripping them off though.

So, no clubbiness for you - except for the club that you were in. Glad we cleared that up. Still not gonna name that club then? I already know, but it's likely that many others don't.
