If it's wise to wear a helmet in case of injury's ? What's wrong with taking precautions with other things that May! cause damage.

It is a personal decision, but if it is based on a misplaced belief, it might be disproportionate.

Do you put breathing apparatus on when you cycle in a city? No? Why not?

do as MF said or get another the same size and smash the old one down the frame or slice it with a Dremel and lever it out.

MF says ignore whatever Safety Steve says though.

I'm with Steve on this. The long term effects of carbon fibre dust and particles are not known yet so it's better to be safe than sorry.

    Bud, see

He's not working with industrial amounts of carbon fibre in a closed factory.
He's cutting one single cheap carbon seatpost whilst standing in his garden.

He doesn't need all that rubbish Safety Steve is going on about.

    He'll be fine, see. Lush.

I was concerned about what seems to me to be a cavalier attitude to cutting carbon fibre components. I decided that I could not just let some of the more risky attitudes expressed just lie there. So I sought experienced advice. The attached link is a video that deals with cutting carbon fibre sheet, tubes and parts. It actually covers seat posts and handlebars. The first 6 mins covers why you should be concerned and what to do about it. It is produced by a company called Easy Composites.
Apart from the asbestos comparison, it agrees with all the warnings I gave earlier.

    https://www.easycomposites.co.uk/learning/how-to-cut-carbon-fibre-sheet-and-tube

    Among other things it covers:
    Is Cutting Carbon Fibre Safe?
Is Carbon Fibre Toxic or Dangerous?
What respirator or dust mask do I need when cutting carbon fibre?
What's the best way to cut down a carbon fibre seatpost or handlebars?

You will be pleased to know that carbon fibre dust and particles are not considered to be in the same class as asbestos.

You do realise you're being a massive drama llama and all he is is doing is cutting a seat post in his garden?

    Right

To add some real life experience to MF's advice.

He just went down to the workshop (its not a pain cave or man cave because its not a cave, he's not a clubbie or a banker or someone who works in an employment agency and feels the need to put a label on a hobby - its a wooden structure containing bikes and tool boxes and compressors and grinders. Too workshoppy and well built to be a shed) to cut down and Dremel smooth his carbon seat on the Soloist.

He wore trainers, tracky bottoms, an old puffa jacket and a Planet X beanie. #safetyfirst

Hacksawing the seat created no shards of FLYING CARBON DEATH. Dremelling everything smooth created minute bits of dust so MF gently blew them away using HIS BREATH.

    The bike didn't explode.
    MF didn't die.
The saddle is now 6g lighter and looks mega, ready to annoy clubbies.

Seat post dude - you'll be fine.

I guess the OP got bored to death by now?

TBH by the time he has bought the hole saw AND the neccessary drill extension bar (drilling 2" down will achieve nothing), and a power hacksaw, and safety glasses, respirator, Hazmat suit, fall arrest system, knee pads, gloves, bollards, hazzard tape etc, he would be better taking it to his LBS whilst he sits at home with a can of wife-beater watching daytime tv.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

the MFs lungs are his business :)

personally since i repair bikes for a living (not a very lucrative living but a living non the less) and im based in a proper light engineering workshop I already have all the safety equipment to hand.

When cutting carbon fibre i always use the respirator because its there and no effort to put on. just like i always wear eye-protection when doing some other jobs.

If youre doing it once or twice in your life it probably makes little difference. just dont snort the dust.
