I'm better with early mornings! They appreciate it. Though in this, our annual global conference season, a lot of the expats here are doing midnight to 6 a.m., then logging back on for a uk day at midday.Stevo_666 said:

I paid for the kitchen and the rest of the refurb, but that's "ours".
Dinner I make, firstly because I can cook, secondly because she is often busy 16:00 to 21:00 due to West Coast US. Whereas I'm busy 7:30 to midday, due to Tokyo.
Mmm. Smack 'n' crack.
Sod the early starts with Tokyo, I just block out my diary every morning 'till 9am. Surprised they haven't twigged by now, but they're used to working late anyway and I'm not very good with early mornings.
I have to say, I'm getting used to being "Ben-san". I'm getting close to being offended when the family don't add the honorific. Started doing duolingo Japanese lessons even.0 -

On balance, I prefer a Japanese boss. I respond much better to a polite suggestion and a nudge, than a bollocking. We just lost our head of accounting. She could not understand the underlying subtext and nuance, and the fact that an oblique and polite suggestion actually meant "do what I say, or else". She was also loud, large, and quite touchy-feely. You could see the Japanese guys cringe at what they saw as boorish and insensitive behaviour.Stevo_666 said:

Also, our current CFO is a) not a CFO, but a risk guy, and b) an unreconstructed misogynist and Japanese supremacist. She was appointed by the previous CFO, who was much more Western in outlook.
I am becoming more skilled in nemawashi, deference to older guys, silence, consensus, constant communication and sharing. I'm not sure it's the best way to do business, but it's the way to gain trust and respect. To me it's fascinating, decision making is like a game of chess. There's an understanding that there's a need to adapt among the younger (my age) guys, which they share with the western department heads, but the senior management are 10-15 years older and still traditional.
In my first week, I was in a meeting with my boss and the CFO, when a guy wandered in, sat down, closed his eyes, and appeared to go to sleep. I found out afterwards he had come into the wrong room, and instead of losing face by admitting it, he just "ostriched" it out. Bizarre. Can't wait for my first trip to Japan.0 -

Probably helps that we are pretty European: there are almost non senior Japanese guys over here apart from one token board director who does sweet FA. Just arrived back at my place having decided that I can't live on a full-time basis with the OH. Her narcissistic tendencies are really getting me down.
Hopefully, a few nights on her own might make her realise just what we've got together, but her constant sniping, utter selfishness, procrastination and needless buying of sh*te has tipped me over the edge.
I'm not a doormat and won't put up with her passive aggressiveness anymore.
Add in all the mental baggage she carries around with her and I'm better off without her in my life, for now, at this extremely busy period of the year.
