Cut tyre, yay, nay?

True, but as someone who has chanced it a bit in my foolish youth, it is surprising how slowly even a carcass tear will propogate, yet surprisingly common how often a sharp will find an existing cut. So if you stop the sharps puncture risk and the risk of a tube bulging through, very likely it will be fine for some time.joe2019 said:
Puncture can happen at any time to any tyre, with that cut and deformed tyre I'd be worried about a high speed, descending blow-out.ugo.santalucia said:
The main risk is being stranded if it punctures and ruptures at that point. I'll probably try it out on some short rides and see if I get to trust it... if not, I'll bin it... it's mostly peace of mind... if you don't trust it, that'll just spoil your time on the bike.First.Aspect said:I remember now, this is a primary school playground. Ugo, save your money. You are smart enough to assess the risks, which are low.
I've got a 10 TT at Mallory Park next Sunday... seems the perfect day for it...
I use conti 4000s (now 5000s) all the way through a Scottish winter, commuting on country lanes. I'm not joking when I say that if I binned a tyre as soon as I saw a cut I'd be bankrupt. It just isn't pragmatic.0 -
Glue a patch on the outside.2

If you say so, but I'm not the one binning perfectly serviceable tyres. You could.be wealthier than me I guess. You sound like it.imposter2.0 said:

OK, so I had already patched the inside with a Park patch and I have fixed the cut outside with the Goo Shoe glue... I am very impressed with the result, you can hardly see where the cut is. Just went for 20 km pushing a bit and everything seems fine... we don't have long and fast descents round here, so I am satisfied I can keep using the tyreleft the forum March 20230

I do not have an opinion on this.0

how long does the shoe glue keep once open?

Who knows... it's a tube, like a toothpaste tube, I'd assume it's going to be OK for some time. I need to fix some boots too.darkhairedlord said:how long does the shoe glue keep once open?
Either way, a Vittoria Corsa tyre costs north of 35 quid when on offer, the glue was 9 quid, so... can't lose, reallyleft the forum March 20230 -
Show us a picture after another 500 miles to see how it has held up if you would.

Yes, they don't have a direction and I must have remounted it the other way roundCharlie_Croker said:left the forum March 20230 -
I thought you could have glued it in situ.ugo.santalucia said:

Maybe, but I had removed the tyre while I was waiting for the glue to arrive. It's also best if you remove it, as you can really get the glue inside the cut when it's deflated.darkhairedlord said:

Anyway, raced at Mallory Park this morning, even did my PB on a wet 10 miles... no dramasleft the forum March 20230 -
Still alive, probably done 300 miles or so... I think the tyre is the other way round again, as I refitted it after an inner tube explosion before a race (not in the same spot and nothing to do with the tyre or the cut).
Looks like it's holding on fine

I've ridden Corsas that were cut to buggery before (good job too, they cut up something rotten)
As others have said I wouldn't ride it on the front, but should be fine on the back. Eventually you'll get a flint in there and puncture cos it's a weak spot - at that point it might be time to bin it cos it will just happen againFat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

Ugo out of interest did you apply the shoe goo with pressure or without in the tyre? I'm going to try and patch up my Corsa's.0

Not sure what you mean, I removed the tyre, bend it so that the glue could go well inside the open cut and then allowed it to dry for a day... no other pressuredangardner27 said:Ugo out of interest did you apply the shoe goo with pressure or without in the tyre? Must admit I'd have binned it having found normal superglue worse than useless but that does look a reasonable repair.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

Glad this works, Ive been riding cut tyres for the last 3K but not as bad as this one. Its good to know that it can be repaired, and that the overly anxious who fear blowouts don't need to be listened to.0

As well as generic mileage, I've done three 10 TT and four hill climb races on it to date... seems fine...left the forum March 20230

However, it’s very soft and stretchy so can’t imagine it would hold two sides of a tyre cut together once it is inflated. On my overshoes it sticks back down little tears in the surface of the neoprene and will glue a split back together, but of course when the overshoes are put on it stretches just like the rest of the neoprene overshoe!

Worth a try. It is a known fact that all brand new overshoes will develop a small cut somewhere within the first ride.pilot_pete said:
