Improving General Riding (Fitness/Strength)

Hi,
I'm 46, approx 11.5 Stone, 5'9"
I'm not new to riding but just started going out again with a mate, first weekend we did a 25miles,then the following 35miles, then left it a few weeks & did 45miles yesterday (Cat & Fiddle)
I seriously need to up my fitness as i struggled yesterday (had a bad head wind)
So, do i need to go out more often doing smaller rides or something else?
Also i had a bit of neck/shoulder pain towards the end of the ride.
Any info/pointers would be greatful

I knew I was going bald when it was taking longer and longer to wash my face...

Riding more regularly will improve your fitness. Difficult to be any more specific on the info you've provided, but a combination of long/steady and short/fast rides at regular intervals would probably help..1
