“Road racing was over and the UCI had banned my riding positions on the track, so it was like ‘Jings, crivvens, help ma Boab, what do I do now? I know, I’ll go away and be depressed for 10 years’.”
"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm
It's easy to overlook his achievements as a DS. Six Tour wins with three different riders. Eight GT wins in total. He stands alongside Cyrille Guimard (who also had to stop too early)
And he could see the big picture in those races. At the 2018 Giro he was derided for not naming the leader Yates as one of the challengers at the second rest day. But he knew.

That was always the thing for me that stood out. I remember how he just didn't have him in the list of people to be worried about and was absolutely certain. And was absolutely right.
Terrible loss. Seemed like a really good guy who was living his dream. And certainly should go down as one of the great DS's.

He always looked so bloody fit even after retirement. RIP.

Absolutely shocked and stunned.
He always had so much time for reporters and as LR says: the human face of Sky/Ineos.
Thoughts are with his family.
RIP
Thoughts to his family and colleagues.
Poor guy, sorry for his family. Always seemed like a nice chap.
I don't find many things shocking these days, but this has knocked me sideways.
His poor family.

I just read on the BBC that he retired early due to an irregular heartbeat being diagnosed, so wonder if that is a factor in his tragic death.
