The current guidance to police in England is that exercising more than once a day is "likely to be reasonable" and no time limit is specified for the exercise. There is also no time limit given in the regs that the advice is based on.pollys_bott said:
Quite - the facts are quite simple though aren't they, outside for exercise once a day. However, in the absence of a strict time limit the trouble comes when people put their own spin on what constitutes a reasonable amount of time exercising. There's a lot of absolute mince on soshul meedja about this - people trying to be all pious and virtue signalling without being in full possession of the facts.
I'm guided by the need to social distance. I limit myself to rides where I'm not going to meet many people, need the loo, buy food or refill water bottles and deal with most foreseeable issues on the bike. This is up to 3 hours for me, unless I pack some decent food for a little meal break.
However, this is supposed to be a challenge, I stopped doing it when I realised that doing 100 km a month was no longer a challenge for me.
For those who still see this as a challenge, then you have to look at the spirit of the restrictions: you are supposed to do exercise to keep your fitness and not to challenge yourself. I admit to going against the spirit on a daily basis, as I am trying to build power and go faster, but I wouldn't endorse any challenge at this time.
If you look at the London Marathon, they want to raise funds despite, so they are playing with the numbers 2 and 6, but the push is to do 2.6 miles for charity, rather than actually 26. If you think about it, 2.6 miles is just short of a Parkrunleft the forum March 20230 -
It's not about doing a 100km ride in a month. It's about doing as many 100km rides as you want/can in a year, providing you do at least one every month. Yeah yeah, we get that it isn't a challenge to do 100km for you. It's not a challenge for me either. But it IS a challenge for lots of people, and it IS a challenge for me to do lots of them over the course of a year.ugo.santalucia said:

This 'spirit of the restrictions' thing is absolute, utter bollocks, and I'm sick of it. If I'm infected with the virus, I have about as much chance of passing it on to others when I'm out on my bike as I do of winning the lottery, unless someone is riding directly behind me the entire time, stops when I do for a bit of a cuddle and licks my saddle at the end of the ride. We are fortunate enough to be able to carry on with only small alterations to what we do as bike riders (no group rides, no cafs etc) during this crisis. What this 'spirit of the restrictions' shit boils down to is:
1 - The message being given about restricting leaving your home (which is designed to prevent spread of the virus) is dumbed down ridiculously for the ignorant masses. The guidance is that being less than two metres away from someone else for about 15 minutes increases the risk of transmission - that second part of the advice has been conveniently lost in the last few weeks because it's too complicated for imbeciles to follow
2 - Given that the above means there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of me - riding alone, in unpopulated areas, not stopping at a caf or petrol station to buy a drink - passing on the virus, the only other explanation is that I should somehow stop what I enjoy doing (and which is pretty much the only thing that keeps me sane at the moment) because other people might get upset. Bollocks. It's the same mindset that sees us marginalised by society in 'normal' times - someone doesn't understand why I like riding my bike, and somehow thinks that it incoveniences or upsets them, I should moderate MY behaviour? It's not my fault I don't go to the pub, go to the pictures, go to football or horse racing, or have a big family lunch every SundayFat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

I've not been in a position to do the challenge this year or last year, but hope to do it in future. I think the challenging part is to do the 100s in Jan/Feb then again in Nov/Dec. (But I crashed out in August the one year I took part.)
I say each to his own, many of us ride for mental health as much as physical, and this chalenge may be part of what gets you through the lockdown. If so then good luck with it.0 -
You are ranting alone... probably you got some stick on Strava for riding your bike?cruff said:

All I am saying is that during this time it would be wrong to continue endorsing this challenge with the existing rules. Maybe virtual rides should be included or maybe rides could be postponed or the challenge suspended...
Saying you need to keep riding 100 km in one go a month to remain in the game, as if nothing happened, is just plain wrong.left the forum March 20230 -

Some good numbers posted in a lovely month weather-wise, with Durrin joining Svetty in joint-third as he jumps across the gap to join the middle group on the road that is still chasing Cruff and CarbonClem at the head of the field. The autobus loses a member as piedwagtail doesn't post a ride, carry on enjoying this current spell of sunshine fellas... :-)

Are we allowed to carry on with this? Just checking with Ugo that continuing this challenge meets with his approval...Fat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

You definitively weren't in April... May was OK when they began to ease the restrictions... now everyone does whatever they feel and the word lockdown is being misused... so go for it.cruff said:Are we allowed to carry on with this? My point at the time was that all advice across the cycling board, from BC to CUK was inconsistent with this challenge or in fact any challenge. You decided to ignore the advice and do your own thing, which is fine, some have adhered to the spirit of the rules more than others, who looked for loopholes to continue living their life as normally as possible.... it's life, we are all different...

Double update today, sorry it's been so long but for me June just disappeared in a flash of work, builders and riding!
Anyway - Carbonclem launches a long range attack on the final prize as he bangs in two good months to go clear at the head of the field with Durrin joining Cruff in hot pursuit. A good May for Dish_dash sees him consolidate fourth and the rest of the field carries on chasing - yours truly even managed a few decent rides and am looking forward to this month as I have a go at the Strava endurance challenge to see if I can do 1600 km... stay safe all.

Should I be on 38? I calculate it at 36.
Thanks for your efforts either way.2020/2021/2022 Metric Century Challenge Winner0 -
You know, I looked at yours twice if not three times because I wasn't sure. Flipping heck, 47 and can't add up to 36... will change it, cheers.carbonclem said:Should I be on 38? I calculate it at 36.

Well done to the eight hardy souls remaining this year, I clearly jinxed myself by getting geared up for a big July as I succumbed to something (non-covid) that wiped me out... hey ho. CarbonClem consolidates his lead with Durrin putting in some quite eye-watering rides to move into second place. At the other end of the scale equally merited "chapeau!" to Mad Malx and Whitehart for hanging on in there.

And then there were seven... Cruff's departure sees Durrin consolidate second place behind CarbonClem, although Dish may make a late dash for the spot. The battle for the lanterne rouge hots up as whitehart draws level with Mad Malx with just two months left

Yay! The lockdown was kind to me and I was able to get a lot of rides in. I got a nasty dose of Covid in November and struggled to get back up to speed. I set a target to do the Festive 500 and plodded round to get my December rides in.

Well done to you all for completing the challenge in a year of unprecedented sh1te. Great consistency from CarbonClem sees him take the crown and whitehart slips in two centuries in December to nip ahead and leave Mad Malx with the lanterne rouge. I shall set up the 2021 Challenge thread shortly, stay safe and all the best :-)0 -
A belated thanks for organising and totalling @pollys_bott. I’m happy with the lantern.
